The Biotechnology study programme at the University of Pretoria has a strong emphasis on gene technologies and
students are given a solid background in biochemistry, genetic
s and molecular microbiology. We do, however, also
recognise that even though we give emphasis to gene technologies, Biotechnology is a very diverse field of study. It
is for this reason that the programme has 90 elective credits, thereby allowing studen
ts the freedom of choice. Past
experience has, however, taught us that students all too often end up with a combination of electives that does not
allow them entrance into any of our established postgraduate programmes. Students who wish to focus their de
grees
in the following research fields are therefore strongly advised to choose one of the preferable combinations of
electives listed below.


Please note that students who wish to deviate from these suggested combinations must take the responsibility of

ensuring that their choice of electives does not affect their future prospects with regards to postgraduate studies.
