Christmas Lights

During the winter seasons, people
enjoy decorating their yard

with Christmas lights. For homes
that do not have an easily accessible outdoor power outlet, it is often nec
essary to keep a window open,

complicated extension cord run

from an indoor outlet to
power the outdoor lights.
This poses 1) a safety issue (trip hazard,
chained extension cords with exposed contacts, especially for families with children and 2) i
n colder days,
a tremendous loss
of heat end energy, resulting in higher utility bills, on top

of the already expensive decorative lighting cost.

Outdoor Events

When hosting an outdoor event, additional lighting and sound systems may often
be required. This requires

chaining extension cords outside

and running speaker wires

(often though inconvenient high traffic areas)
, again posing a
high trip hazard for a large group of people.
If a cord is run under a door, and the door is repeatedly closed on the cord,
excessive wear may expose high voltage wires causing a safety hazard
.


PROPOSED SOLUTION


Overview:

The
VoltDuo

system is composed of two parts, the
VoltDuo

base transmitter and a receiver module. The receiver module
is swappable for a wide variety of usages. Initial offerings will include a simple extension cord module (
I
nvisiCord
), an
outdoor lighting fixture module (
AnyGlow
) and a beefier extension cord module that is capable of transmitting
audio/data as well (
InvisiCord+
).
The base transmitter module is Wi
-
Fi enabled to be able to allow the customer to
monitor the devi
ce and provide data for wireless transmission to a
VoltDuo

receiver module.
Example of usages could be
for semi
-
permanent installations such as outdoor Christmas lights, event lighting, or distributed speakers that would
otherwise require cumbersome wiring
.


Design:

The concept of this device is product of basic electromagnetic physics. The
VoltDuo

uses the principle of inductance to
convert electrical current into a magnetic field and vice versa. To make this product work the way it is designed, a
supplementary wireless protocol will be implemented to provide control and communication between the t
ransmitter
and receiver modules. The transmitter module will have a current controller, induction transmitter and data transceiver.
The receiver modules will each contain a current monitor, induction receiver and data transceiver.
The data transceiver
modu
les will both transmit internal signals and customer provided data. Customer provided data can be synced to the
device using Wi
-
Fi.


Safety:

The current monitor and controller will communicate to each other via the data protocol to determine the efficiency

of
the product by comparing the amount of power, in watts, sourced from the transmitter and amount of power being
drained to the load on the receiver side. If it is measured to exceed a preset energy loss threshold (usually caused by
excessive material th
ickness or incorrect transfer material, such as metal), the VoltDuo will enter a safety shutoff mode to
prevent excessive heat buildup. If excessive heat buildup is sensed, an early earning will be alerted to the user (to allow
time for the user to find an

appropriate alternative) before finally shutting off the device for thermal protection.
