Introduction to Biotechnology



Included in this course is a basic overview of current
trends and careers in biotechnology. Additionally,
emphasis on basic laboratory skills along with the
business, regulatory, and ethical aspects of
biotechnology is included.

students to the fundamentals of
biotechnology.

Scenario

1. An Oil Spill Investigation

Students will determine the
effects of a simulated oil spill
on the survival of organisms in
an aquatic community.


Micropipeting exercise


You are a member of an environmental emergency response
team. As a team member, you are responsible for identifying
organisms in trouble, rescuing them, and determining the
source of the pollution. Your job is to test water along the coast
at eight different sites to determine if the concentration of oil is
high enough to kill the oysters.

2. Nuclear Transplants

Students will work with a
partner to complete an
activity modeling the removal
of a cell nucleus and the
insertion of an alternate
control center.

An abandoned baby gray bat has just been brought into the
veterinarian’s office at the local branch of the state’s wildlife
protection agency where you are completing an internship. The
gray bat is an endangered species in Georgia.

At that moment, you hear an announcement that states that
there are positions opening for medical research scientists at
the new Discovery Labs. These scientists will be working on a
special nuclear transplant project.

3. Artificial Heart Valves

company, Healthy Hearts, a five year grant to develop and test
prototypes for artificial heart valves. The CEO of Healthy

Team. With great anticipation, you prepare for your first series
of heart valve designs and experiments…

4. Find the Gene

Students will work with a

to explore how scientists use
genetic information from a
family to identify a gene
associated with a specific
genetic trait.

Dr. Brown was recently invited by her nephew’s science
teacher to visit his seventh grade class and discuss her work
with the students as part of a career exploration program.
Instead of simply talking about her job, Dr. Brown decided to
have the students “experience” the type of work that she does
by performing a simulated gene mapping procedure.

5. Fish Sticks

Students will work with a
partner to complete a
population genetics simulation
about fish.

Students will fill in a table with
information gathered from
choosing colored craft sticks
in a simulated exchange of
genetic material (genes).

The students will observe and
record the genotype and
phenotype make
-
up of the
fish.

The students will also observe
change in response to
environmental conditions and
the possible outcomes
because of these conditions.


Use colored sticks, beads,
etc. to simulate population
genetics changes in response
to environmental challenge.

An environmental disaster occurs. Factory waste harmful to
algae is dumped into the stream, killing much of the algae very
rapidly. The remaining rocks and sand are good camouflage
for the yellow, red, and orange fish. Now the green fish are
easily spotted by predators and can’t survive or reproduce.

6. Culminating Activity

Labradoodle is an international company specializing in
the development and production of genetically
engineered products. The company has posted record
profits over the last four quarters. C.E.O., Dr. Demetrius
Green, has decided to take some of the company’s
earnings and invest it in two new projects: Design
-
a
-
Pet
and Replace
-
a
-
pet.


He asked the head of each department to prepare to
work together to breed and care for hundreds of
different kinds of genetically engineered pets. The
company would need to work efficiently to keep the
company economically viable long enough to achieve
two special objectives: cloning “Replace
-
a
-
pets” and
engineering “Design
-
a
-
Pets”.


Each department was given a special problem to
research. The department heads were also told that
they would have to present their solutions to the Board
of Directors by next Monday morning.

rule?

Students will work with a partner to perform a
lab simulation to identify the owner of an
electronic device left in a classroom and
subsequently claimed by four different
students. Students will model the processes
of electrophoresis and DNA fingerprinting

While straightening up her classroom at the
end of her first day back, she found that an
electronic device with earphones that had
been left behind a stack of books on one of
the work benches.

Her classes were just beginning their study of
genetics, and Ms. Middleton proposed that
they conduct a DNA test to identify which of
the four students might be the owner of the
electronic device.

2. Disease Detection and Prevention (ELISA)

Prepare and set up lab for class. Exchange
simulated body fluids and perform a
quantitative ELISA. Find out who was
originally infected, research prevention
and treatment of Hepatitis B in the U. S

There was a question about whether some
bug was going around since so many students
were complaining. To better understand what
may have happened, your class has been
selected to participate in research on the
outbreak of disease at your school. You will
conduct an experiment using biotechnology.
You will simulate the spread of a disease that
is transmitted through contact with blood or
body fluids. After exposure, each group
member will take on the role of Biotechnology
Lab Technician by conducting an ELISA. One
member from each group will assume the role
of Epidemiologists and investigate what is
happening at your school based on the results
you report from conducting the ELISA. The
suspected outbreak is related to Hepatitis B.

Students will investigate a Vaccine Adverse
Event and make a research support by
following simulated investigative procedures.
They will present their findings to an invited
guest who will act as the Medical Officer for
the Health Department.

A prominent manufacturing company in the
Midwestern U.S. has produced a vaccine
called Salmon A that is very effective in
preventing Salmonavian Flu. Today on PRE
-
TEND News a NEWS FLASH! came through
that the WHO or CDC had launched an
investigation of mysterious deaths following
patients receiving the Salmon A Vaccine. The
magnitude and severity of this problem
warrants a full scaled investigation. Your
class will be divided into teams and involved in
conducting the investigation.
