“L
ORD
,

MAKE ME A POTATO

While my husband and I were living in Pakistan
m
any years ago, our six month old

bab
y died. An old
Punjabi came to comfort us.

“A tragedy like this is similar to being plunged
into

water,” he explained. If you are an egg, your
affliction will make you hardboiled and unresponsive. If
you are a potato, you will emerge soft and pliable.

It may sound funny to God, but there have been
many times when I have prayed, “O Lord, make me a
potato.”

Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ,

the Son of the living God.”
~
Matthew 16:16

One of the more interesting figures we meet in the Bible is Peter.
He was a unique individual. At times, he could be impulsive, bold and
brash

brushing up against arrogance. At other times, he was a lonely,
insecure man. Perhaps, that is what makes Pe
ter so appealing to us
because we see a bit of our own selves in him.

Peter was a fisherman, a seasoned veteran who had navigated
and fished the waters of the Sea of Galilee. Fishing was his life

or so
he thought.

It was after an unsuccessful night of fis
hing that Peter’s life
changed

forever. As he and his brother, Andrew, rowed towards shore,
a crowd began to gather at the shoreline. The center of attention was
Jesus. This wasn’t Peter’s first meeting with the renowned prophet. A
previous encounter h
ad brought the two together. On that occasion,
Jesus told Peter that he would be known as Cephas, Aramaic for “rock.”

On that day Jesus reached out again to Peter. “Follow me, and I
will make you fishers
-
of
-
men” were his simple but powerful words to
Pete
r.

Peter, indeed, did follow. He could only marvel at what he observed.
He witnessed firsthand the miracles performed by Jesus: changing of
water into wine; feeding of the 5,000; healing of the blind, lame and
mute; raising of the dead. Peter knew

that Jesus was no mere prophet as
some had thought. Given the opening to express his faith to Jesus, Peter
boldly proclaimed, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Peter’s proclamation identified Jesus as the Messiah that the
prophets had writ
ten about in the Old Testament. He was the Savior, the
Son of God, whom God promised to send b
ecause He loved the world
that H
e created. Jesus was the “Lamb of God,” who came to be
sacrificed on a cross to take away Peter’s sins and those of the entire
w
orld.

Peter needed that Savior. He wasn’t always the rock he appeared
to be. At times, he was more like shifting sand blown by every wind of
thought or brushed aside by selfish pride and arrogance.

In faith, Peter turned to his new friend and Savior wh
o gave him
hope and peace

even when his life hit rock bottom. Isn’t that the peace
you want too? Like Peter, we would like to share it with you!

Peter was a fisherman before Jesus
called him. The fish is a symbol for Peter's
work of sharing
the gospel as a “Fisher of Men”.

True Treasures

Treasure hunting is alive and well in America today. Some of
the popular reality TV shows today are

about

people finding “treasures
.

You have reality shows with people trying to strike

it rich

in ab
andon
storage lockers or in the goldmines of Alaska or fixing up old cars or
flipping houses or in pawn stores or in junkyards. It makes for
interesting tele
vision because sometime they make big profit
. It is why
lotteries and even gambli
ng on the stock market are so popular. So many
people dream of making it big
. If they can “make it
” easier

and faster
,
all
the better

it is for

these modern treasure hunters
.

The truth is that m
any

go bust

on their treasure

or have the winning

ticket find that all their problems don’t magically go away.

The problem
is not in the items themselves, after all God gave us material gifts as a
blessing.
No, t
he trouble is that people are

looking with worldly vision
and not heavenly vision.
The result is that they do not see the many true
treasures God has given them.

Beginning on September 16

in a series of special sermons and
services, we will l

our Lord has blessed us. We will rejoice in the following

Sunday Education Hour
:

Starting on
Sunday, September 9
th

we will begin to study a
series of topics entitled,
“WHY DO WE TEACH
THAT?”

That question has been asked by many
inside and outside of church. Instead of
ignoring
the question, we will attempt to hit some

certainly not all

of the major topics that are confronting confessional
Lutherans. We will examine teachings and beliefs held by some in the
general public that are in fact just the opposite of what
we teach and
believe. Lord willing, we will examine the following questions:

Why do we teach that “old way” of looking at Scripture?

Why do we teach that about Creation?

Why do we teach that about women as pastors?

Why do we teach that about homosexuality

(and marriage)?

Why do we teach that about abortion (and early life issues)?

Many of these topics are controversial and in some cases
emotional issues of today. During the months of September and
October, it is our hope and prayer to set aside personal
and worldly
opinions and seek the simple and clear voice of the LORD through His
Word. Some of these topics will be covered even deeper in upcoming
midweek Bible studies.

In The World

In The Word:

This is the
restart of the popular online Bible class
that explores
news topics of the day in the light of Scripture.
Lord willing, on a weekly basis

unless there is
nothing in the news

Pastor will email out a news
article along with a Bible study on the news topic.
It is hoped that the Holy Spirit, thr
ough this Bible study, will keep us
grounded in the Scriptures as we look at the world in which we live. To
join this group, email Pastor at Pastor@ChristOurRock.org.

Upcoming Bible Studies
: Lord willing, starting later in the year
we will be offering

the following Bible studies: Christian Book Group,
Women’s Monthly Bible Study (a joint Bible study of three Rochester
WELS churches to be held at COR) and a midweek Bible study on
various topics. In November and December we will be looking at what
Scri
pture says about the Last Day. We are and will be hearing a lot more
in the coming months about Last Day predictions. This interest is in part
spurred on by the ancient Mayan calendar prediction of the end of the
world occurring on December 21, 2012.

WHAT
DO
WE BELIEVE AND TEACH?

What does God say about the meaning of life &
death, heaven & hell, Word & Sacraments, men & women,
suffering & bles
sings, prayer & peace? In this 9
-
lesson
course we will look at these issues and many more. This
course is designed to introduce the student to the basic truths
of Christianity as revealed in the Bible and as confessed by
our Lutheran Church.

This class

is especially good for the newcomer to
Bible study but is also good for the veteran Bible student.
Class schedules are set up on individual and group basis that
work for people’s schedules. If you would like more
information and/or to set up a schedule,
please either call
Pastor at 252

mail him at Pastor@ChristOurRock.org.

ONLINE BIBLE STUDY

The Bible tells us time and time again that
while we are “in the world” that we are not to
be
“of
the world”. When one looks at the news and
happenings

in the world, a Christian can be confused
and confounded at what is happening.

Starting in September, we will be starting up
our online Bible studies. Pastor will send out an e
-

mailed Bible study that looks at a current news item from a Biblical
perspe
ctive. Students will look at current affairs through a series of
pertinent Bible passages.

TRUTH IN LOVE PROVO UPDATE

This past April, Christ Our Rock hosted a
seminar put on by the Truth In Love Ministry.
The seminar focused on witnessing to the
Mormons. In the past few weeks this ministry
has been working in Pr
ovo, Utah. The following is an excerpt from an
article about the work going on there.

They came from all around the country. Many raised funds to
support their travel, took vacation time from work, and time away from
their families. Fear, unce
rtainty, and apprehension gripped them as they
arrived in Salt Lake City. Shaking knees, knots in the stomach and sweaty
palms were evident when we piled into cars and made our trek to Provo
on Monday morning. These were ordinary Christians whom the Lord w
as
using in an extraordinary way. A desire to come to Provo and be a part
of a mission team was planted in their heart by the Holy Spirit, and they
came. Out of thanksgiving to the Lord and a love for the gospel, they
followed through on the desire to shar
e God's Word. And the Holy Spirit
took it from there. By Friday, they were fearless messengers who
couldn't wait to hit the streets.

The strength of the Lord was evident. The Holy Spirit took us in the
palm of his hands and empowered us with the coura
ge, perseverance
and most importantly, provided the words to speak the truth of God's
Word. It wasn't easy. Many knocks on the door were left unanswered.
Many hearts appeared cold to our presence and our message. Yet, many
of us were provided with golden m
oments when the questions were
sincere, tears were spilled, and looks of gratitude were evident. There is
no question that the Lord provided that divine opportunity at the right
place and at the right time. I can't tell you how amazing it is to not only
be

used by the Holy Spirit to be his messengers, but also to distinctly feel
his presence. It is a type of experience that is transforming. Like wearing
a new pair of prescription glasses, you become so much aware of God's
amazing grace and love.

Our go
als throughout the week were to plant the seed of God's Word.
That was our mission and intent. While the last of our missionaries
returned home on Saturday, the campaign continues. Like farmers who
end the day of planting seeds in the field, they return ho
me to rest with
the satisfaction that their job is done. Now, it's up to the Lord. With the
same confidence that a farmer has that the seeds will take root, we have
great confidence that seeds planted in Provo will take root and
Mormons will come to faith.

We
thank those who are members of TILM's prayer family who
regularly received prayer requests from the field. Many Mormons truly
admired our presence in Provo, plus they were quite impressed with the
love we expressed to them. We were sincere and hon
est. Also, they were
deeply touched when we asked if we could send a prayer request to our
TILM prayer family. You could tell that prayer requests are an unfamiliar
practice in the LDS Church. From these requests, we were provided
additional opportunities
to share God's Word.

Finally, on behalf of the mission teams, we want to thank you for your
prayers and interest. It was keenly felt. You were very much a part of
this great adventure. And we look forward to coming back next summer.
