Genetic engineering has become increasingly popular in today’s culture.
Procedures
involving
IVF, stem cells and human clonin
g are becoming a part of
people
’s

everyday language.
However
,

the term designer babies

has
sparked
much
controversy in the ethical aspects of
today’s world.

T
he primary reason we can pre

select our
baby’s

gender

today

is if
the child

has any
sex
linked
ge
netic disorder
s

such as

muscular dystrophy or turner’s syndrome. The most common
methods used

for such gender selection process

are the PGD
/IVF and m
icrosort. These methods
are used in

separating

the X chromosomes
from the Y chromosomes and then sorting th
e X
chromosomes with their respective X or Y chromosomes to
either
creat
e a b
oy or a girl.

These

gender selection methods have been used to treat medical disorders

presently

but
an
overwhelming majority of the cases have
started
to
arise within

families w
ho approach
doctors
,
as a means to balance their families
.
Recent studies and polls show that more
families
do
have preference of which
gender they would like their

next

child

to be. Some mothers are even
under
going extreme measures like microsort
,

in orde
r
to ensure a baby of their chosen gender.

Ever since London has banned laws against

pre

selecting gender for social purposes,
some families have flown to
the United States

to get their baby’s gender pre selected so they can
start preparation
for
their ne
w “balanced family”.
Essentially, the question we should ask
ourselves is how far is too far
?

When IVF and human cloning first came out, there was
much
social chaos, claiming that
we do not have the same rights as God

and we cannot decide

the fate of some
one. However with
time, the social
implications died down and we accepted
these procedures
as a part of our regular

ongoing society. Should we expect the same for genetic eng
ineering and gender selection
?
Unfortunately
,

this
has become
the least of our wor
ries
. N
ow
scientist
are
theorizing that soon
enough, we can
pre
select the eye color, hair color and even

the skin color of

our children
.

It
l
ooks like g
ender selection may only be a small
step toward
s

opening

Pandora’s

box.
