PHP 5

PHP stands for PHP: Hypertext Pre
-
processor

PHP is a server side scripting language and it is designed specifically for us
e on the
web. For Internet usage, the PHP script is embedded into a Web page and interpreted
on the server before being sent to the client who requested the page.

PHP is most commonly associated with the Apache WWW server and is one of the
most widely used

scripting language on the WWW. The PHP language’s syntax is
similar to the syntax of C. There are also significant influences from
Perl

and the Unix
scripting language
AWK
.

PHP biggest asset is its ability to interact with common databases (including Ora
cle,
Sybase,
MySQL
, ODBC and many others), and offers integration with various external
libraries, which allow the developer to do anything from generating PDF documents to
parsing XML.

Another advantage of PHP, when compared to other scripting languages
is that it is
open
-
source and cross
-
platform, suitable for today's heterogeneous network
environments.

It may be downloaded from
www.php.net
.

ASP.NET

ASP.NET is a technology for creating dynamic Web applications. It is
part of the .NET
Framework. ASP.NET applications can be authored in any .NET compatible language,
including Visual Basic .NET, C#, and J#. ASP.NET pages (Web Forms). The framework
provides for true object
-
oriented programming (OOP), and true inheritance,
p
olymorphism, and encapsulation are supported.

The .NET class library is organized into inheritable classes based around particular
tasks, such as working with XML or image manipulation. ASP.NET provides a
programming model, and infrastructure, to make cre
ating scalable, secure and stable
applications faster, and easier than with previous Web technologies.

MySQL

MySQL

is a popular database with Web Developers. Its speed and small size makes it
ideal for a Web site. In spite of its high performance,
MySQL

i
s simple to download and
install. The installation procedure is straightforward and there is plenty of documentation
to assist with this procedure.
MySQL

runs on a wide variety of operating systems such
as Windows and Linux and is free under the open sourc
e GPL License.

It can be downloaded from
http://www.
MySQL
.com/

Analysis of pros and cons

Advantages of
MySQL

and PHP 5 together

They are both free

They are both Web
-
oriented

They are both easy to use

They are both d
esigned with speed as a major goal

They communicate well together

They both are customizable which means that programmers can modify the PHP
and
MySQL

software to for specific environments

How they work together

PHP provides the application part and
MySQL

provides the database part of a Web
database application. The PHP language is implemented in the writing of the programs
that perform the application tasks. One of these tasks is to move data into and out of the
MySQL

database.

PHP scripts are embedded in
to HTML files with PHP tags. When the task to be
performed by the application requires storing or retrieving of data, the specific scripts
that are designed to interact with a
MySQL

database are implemented. This script
includes the location of the databas
e, its name and the password needed to connect to
it.

Why we are implementing PHP 5 and
MySQL

They are both free

They are both easy to implement

They both already run on the University’s Web server so no installation is required

There is lots of support an
d documentation for both on the Internet

Our programmer/designer has the skills to implement both

Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 (Educational Version)

Dreamweaver is a complete Web development environment, an HTML editor and an
authoring tool, a dynamic
Web page development tool and a Web site management tool
all rolled into one.

Microsoft's FrontPage

Microsoft FrontPage is designed for creating web pages. This program is a good tool for
the beginner. FrontPage is user friendly and is capable of including

any feature a user
would need on a website and it is included in most of the office packages. FrontPage
has its own built in extensions that most web servers support.

Adobe Photoshop CS (version 8)

Adobe Photoshop CS is a high
-
end image editor for the Macintosh and Windows from
Adobe.

The original Mac versions were the first to br
ing affordable image editing down to the
personal computer level in the late 1980s. Since then, Photoshop has become the de
facto standard in image editing.

Although it contains a large variety of image editing features, one of Photoshop's most
powerful c
apabilities is layers, which allows images to be rearranged under and over
each other for placement.

Photoshop is designed to read and convert to a raft of graphics formats, but it provides
its own native format for layers (.PSD extension).

Paintshop Pro

Paintshop Pro is an image creation and editing tool from JASC Software. It provides an
animated GIF editor, a screen
-
capture function and a graphics format conversion
module.

Why we are implementing Adobe Photoshop CS (version 8)

There is lots of support a

WebCT

WebCT Stands for “Web Course Tools”.

WebCT is an authoring environment for teachers, professors, and staff developers who
create online courses, onlin
e conferences or online training. Developed by a university
professor at UBC, WebCT is now one of the most popular authoring tools of its kind.

WebCT requires the use of html documents in its content module. To upload files in
WebCT, all files first have

to be uploaded into the 'Manage Files' area, where they are
stored, and where they can be unzipped. Any embedded images have to be uploaded in
addition to the html file.

In order to make the document available to students, the instructor then has to link

it as
a single page, or add it to a content module. WebCT also offers a nice basic course
template, which can be extensively customized to the desired look and feel.

Most of the customization is carried out in a point and click manner, but some html
know
ledge (such as <br>, and <b>tags) can be beneficial.

Blackboard

A web
-
based software system which is used to support flexible teaching and learning in
face
-
to
-
face and distance courses. It provides tools and facilities for online course
management, conten
t management and sharing, assessment management, and online
collaboration and communication.

Blackboard accepts file formats of any kind in its content areas. Uploading files into
Blackboard is a simple one
-
step process: Create the file in any file format

and upload it
to any content area of your Blackboard course. Blackboard prompts the instructor to
add any missing image files, and zipped files can be unzipped during the same
procedure as well.

Blackboard provides a clean and efficient course template w
ith limited customization
options for the overall look and feel. Designers have control over the way any of the
content is formatted, and with sufficient html skills, designers can create any look they
want.
