Dear Ken Joy,

I am

a computer science student of the University of Nevada, Reno, and I am
graduating in May 2002. I have taken courses in computer graphics, and my senior
project is a virtual reality simulator for training miners to evacuate mines under
emergency condition
s. Following graduation, I intend to pursue a M.S. and Ph.D. in
computer science at UC Davis. As we have previously discussed, I will focus my
graduate study on computer graphics and virtual reality.

Interac
tive Cloth for Immersive Virtual Reality


Purpose:


Realistically modeling and interacting with flexible objects, like cloth, is a
computationally challenging problem in computer graphics. Recently, advances in
algorithms for modeling cloth and in compute
r graphics hardware have made it possible
to interact with cloth in real
-
time. One application of these real
-
time cloth algorithms is
for immersive virtual reality (VR). For example, a virtual person can be modeled with
realistic clothing, or a team of f
ashion designers can see their clothing designs in 3D and
see how they move when a person moves or when the wind blows.


Proposed Solution:


The proposed solution is a virtual reality simulation of cloth. The first program
will be a stand
-
alone simulation
, and pending its success, cloth will be integrated with
other existing VR simulations. Which VR simulations the cloth will be integrated with,
will be determined upon completion of the stand
-
alone simulation.


Organization:


Two researchers, with guidanc
e from Professor Ken Joy, will complete this
project. Daniel Coming will direct this project, and one other researcher will assist him.

This project will require a workstation with strong graphical capabilities. This

xplanation of Budget:


The budget is broken down as follows: The computer workstation is intended for
use in researching, coding, and small
-
scale testing of an immersive VR simulator with
interactive cloth. Salary will be divided up between two researche
rs over the course of
one year of research. Other costs include a proprietary percentage that the university
requires from any research grant.


Evaluative Systems:


The measurement of success of the stand
-
alone project will be whether or not the
VR cloth

program can run in real
-
time with greater than 30 frames per second. The
measurement of success of integration with other simulations will be based on how much
the addition of cloth drops the frame rates of the simulations.


Expected Benefits:


This proj
ect will produce a virtual reality simulation with interactive cloth. Also,
this will integrate interactive cloth into one or more virtual reality simulations. This
project will produce research in VR cloth algorithms. In addition, research from this
pr
oject will generate two papers for publication.


Summary:


Interactive cloth is difficult to model for real
-
time virtual reality simulations. The
proposed project will generate such cloth in a form that can integrate with virtual reality
simulations. Thi
s cloth may then be used in a variety of applications, including fashion
design or clothing on animated actors for movies or games.
