E1.1: Harmonized Vocabulary and Ontology for
Composite Network Modeling

The complexity of the evolving dynamics of composite networks calls for their
formal modeling for better understanding and automated analysis of properties
of these networks.
•Developing a shared, harmonized vocabulary and ontology across social,
information, and communication networks;
• Identification of entities in a composite network and their attributes;
•Characterization of the relationships between network attributes and of their
impact on network formation;
•Representation of the dynamics in composite networks as they evolve over
time.
Technical Approach
• Capture conceptual relationships between key elements of
networks as ontologies using semantic web languages:
• Resource Description Framework (RDF)
• Web Ontology Language (OWL)
• Rule Interchange Format (RIF)
• Model rules of network formation and the propagation of
formed relations across different networks.
• Model time-varying attributes and relationships using an
event representation model; we are also investigating a
process model for representing changes in networks.
• Model uncertainty in networks using probabilistic or fuzzy
extensions of OWL and RIF.
Innovations
• A common knowledge base for the use of the network-
science community at large.
• A formal representation of both certain and uncertain
information in networks that supports automatic
inference.
• An improved understanding of network dynamics which
will leverage better diagnosis methodologies for network
failures.
