Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The proposal was met
with success and the funds were awarded for a 4

year period. I was
involved in this project
performing research and guiding a group of Ph.D. and M. Sc. students. We built a highly
reconfigurable open control (hierarchical) architecture that is maximizing the unification of the
reconfiguration aspects of individual industr
ial machines including robots and CNC systems.

aims at transferring
the technology of friction stir welding through adapting the end

mill machine tool

that
exist

in the
workshop of the Engineering College, to be employed in fiction stir welding of different aluminum
alloys (s
imilar and dissimilar) and welding the aluminum and copper alloys. Some of the
mechanical properties of the joints will be measured to investigate the quality of the welding joints.
Also, metallographic investigations will be made, by using optical microsc
ope, in order to examine
the weld microstructure to find out the dominated mechanisms that may play a role in
strengthening the joints.

A research project
funded by

the Deanship of Scientific Research, Qassim University, Saudi
Arabia.
The objective of this research work is to investigate different types of

integration among
chassis control systems for better lateral dynamics performance. Emphasis is on the possible
integration to increase safety factors during emergency situation where the driver requires steering
and braking commands. Until recently rese
arch attention was not given to this point. Most of the
work done previously involves linear vehicle models that compromise the accuracy of the solution
within the nonlinear range. A relatively high lateral acceleration maneuver is an example of a
situat
ion in which nonlinear dynamics are important. In general, dealing with nonlinear models
requires the application of modern robust control techniques. Fuzzy logic inference systems and
neural network applications are only examples for modern tools used to

analyze and control
nonlinear systems.
