1.

MAGNETIC DESIGN

MJ reported that the magnetic modelling

was well under way. One more week was needed for the
dipoles, and two for the quadrupoles. A report was sent before the meeting.

This should not impact on
the delivery schedule, since the pole tip design does not have to be finalised until just before
man
ufacture. BJAS and MJ agreed to resolve any magnet design issues by email. MJ has sent the
OPERA model for the dipole model as it stands, and will send the final model before the final design
review.

2.

MECHANICAL DESIGN

Contrary to discussions at EPAC, DL do

not

want to remove the spacing plate underneath any of the
magnets


it’s required for height
-
matching other components on the girder. The dipole half
-
height
determines the girder
-
beam distance. Currently
the height of the G dipole is 410mm; with
a half h
eight
of

225mm

including a 20mm spacer plate
. No girders have been ordered yet, so we can be flexible


SCX will inform us of any changes to the dipole height.

The quadrupoles will be painted red, and the dipoles blue. DL will send details of the colour co
des to
SCX.

2.1

Quadrupoles

The quadrupole size has changed from 390mm to 360mm


this is OK. A spacer and
support

plate
should be
adjusted
by a corresponding amount

allowing enough space for kinematic adjusters
.

From experience

with the ALICE magnet
s it has been shown that it is not necessary for helicoils to be
added to the magnet support aluminium tooling plate
(this may save some money).

Two
tapped holes are to

be included for lifting eyes.

NB asked whether the electrical connections were covered
to IP2X standard. Weidmuller terminals
have been selected. MJ will send details of the components, and the electrical group at DL can assess
whether they meet the required standard.

The terminal block should be moved to the top corner, to make su
re the adjustment screws can be
accessed. The M6 hole for the earth connection will be moved to the front of the magnet.

2.2

Dipoles

The poles and yokes will be assembled and then finally machined. The pole profile and the mating
faces are done in th
e same step.

SCX will send the two general assembly drawings for the dipoles when they are ready. DL can use
these to produce girder assemblies.

The F type dipole is for extraction from ALICE; we will make a base plate to go underneath this. CH
will send d
etails to clarify our plans.

The adjustment screws will be moved to the side of the magnet, as their current location u
nder the coils
restricts access
. CH will send out an updated drawing.

MJ asked whether the terminal block had to be o
n the top half of the dipole. It was agreed that it could
be lower down, as long as it does not interfere with the adjustment screws. For the dipoles, the terminal
block will be placed on the side of the magnet, but off
-
centre (closer to the front or the b
ack) to give
access to the adjustment screws.

3.

MANUFACTURING

The magnet steel has been ordered and will be delivered on week 31 (the end of July).

When it arrives,
SCX will send digital photos, and DL will make the next staged payment as agreed. Photos of t
he
copper will be sent this week.


Action MJ

SCX outline their manufacturing method in the document “Quadrupole, mechanical design”. NB
queried why the quadrants were not fixed together first, then wire
-
eroded. MJ explained that the
mating surfaces would b
e wire
-
eroded at the same time as the pole profile, and that the fiducial holes
would be done after wire erosion and assembly. NB accepted this method; it should be sufficient to
produce the specified mechanical tolerances in the completed magnets.

anufacture kinematic adjustment screws.

Magnet yoke quadrants are to be wire eroded to an accuracy o
f

0.02mm.

Four holes are required on top of the magnets for survey fiducials and shall be machined when
the
magnet yoke has been assembled.

4.

ROTATING COIL FI
XTURE

For aligning the RC to the magnets, a CMM will be set up with the first magnet, measuring the
magnet,
the fixture and the RC together. The test will be repeated several times using the same magnet. NB was

concerned that the repeatability between magn
ets would not be tested. MJ agreed to do CMM
measurements for several magnets.

It was agreed that a representative from DL could be present for some of these tests.

NB suggested another check for the alignment of the RC fixture. An accurately machined

test

shaft
with

the same bearing features and a

shaft radius 1mm less than the quadrupole inscribed radius,
which could be inserted and supported in the

fixture. Slip gauges could be used to measure the gap
between the

test shaft and the poles at both sides of

the magnet.

The test shaft would be available at
Scanditronix to check the alignment of all magnets. MJ

liked the proposal and would discuss in house.

The design work on the fixture will start this week; SCX will send deta
ils to DL when it is ready. SCX

ave not done it this way before.

5.

PROGRAMME

MJ will send out an updated programme by

the end of this week and should include all tasks required
for the rotating coil fixture.

The final design review will be carried out when all the major items are

drawn up.

SCX will send
drawings to DL as they are completed.
