Class description:

T
his class is
designed to enhance your knowledge of Biology. It
is not a self
-
paced class, but is more
self
-
directed than most classes.
I hope to
give

you time to learn topics that we haven’t learned yet, to learn topics in more
depth, enhance your understanding of research technique
s,

participate in the KU
Med Center Mini Medical School program,

and prepare for

contests such as

Eco
-
meet, the Kansas Sta
te Science and Engineering Fair, and
Pitt State’s Biology bowl.

My vision of topics for the year (in order):

1.

Botany and field identification of trees, grasses and forbs.

2.

Microbiology

3.

Genetics

including genetic engineering techniques, protein expression
,
forensic science, and other relatively new developments in this field.

We will also participate in the KU Med Cente
r program, Mini Medical school.

There are 7 units, and we will do approximately 1 unit per month, for a few
days, between the other units o
f study.

Ben will be exempt from the first 2 units, as he will be studying
Bird anatomy,
physiology, natural history and identification, specifically order Passeriformes
,
and s
hortgrass prairi
e ecosystem and general ecology instead, to prepare for
the Ec
omeet contest.

A typical week, in general, will go like this: (subject to change)

Monday

group discussion of the week’s work and research topics

Tuesday
-
Thursday

independent work, with my supervision

Friday

group discussion and assessments

Class asse
ssment tools:

1.

I will have projects for you to complete to help you learn the material.
These will include things like drawing and observations, completion of term
and concept lists, group projects, dissections, field trips, etc.

2.

Your research will invol
ve a presentation, statistical analysis of data,
research report with abstract.

You will have certain parts of your research
due at certain times, with a guideline for each part. Meeting these
deadlines will be part of your grade, as well as evaluation
of the completed
work.

3.

Your performance at the contests will be part of your grade
.

4.

An overall short answer/essay

exam of the topic
s

we cover in class.

5.

My perception of how diligently you work from day to day will be r
ecorded
as a weekly effort grade.
