international
academic and industrial
context



The complexity of modern
electronic, electrical and
more general technical devices

is ever increasing. At
the same time, the reliability

and safety

specifications
for these devices are more and more demanding.


To face these
specifications
, also in the
subdomain of
embe
dded system design,
collaboration between
industry, university colleges and universities is
required. Due to
globalization,
also
international
collaboration is indispensable.

Therefore, the event is a
joint initiative of the Brno Universit
y of Technology
BUT (Czech Republic) and the Catholic University
College Bruges Ostend
KHBO
(Belgium).


The event is
open to
all interested people from
industry, university colleges and universities.
In the
first place, the event is oriented to people

with a
technical background since the event contains

some
major

technical
sessions.


The event is also a
networking

forum since



the BUT and the KHBO are presenting their
research
activities

in the mentioned topics,



there
are

discussion session
s

to search for
collaboration possibilities,



there are coffee breaks.

Embedded system design


a broad range of
technologies and applications


The research centre ReMI

(Reliable Mechatronics and
ICT) of the KHBO involves four areas of expertise:
Enterprise Programming, Electronic Circuit Design and
Realization,
electrical machines and renewable energy,
Flanders Mechatronics Engineering Centre.


The presentation gives an

outline of some current and
future projects and research objectives of the ReMI
research centre.

From a technical point of view, non
destructive ultrasound based quality control using a
Virtex

board and the implementation of always stable
MFIR filters using a Spartan board are discussed
. The
session ends with an open discussion on possibilities
for collaboration with industry and other research
centres.

and fault tolerance in complex and
distributed systems


The presentation gives
an
outline of the evolution of
principles of fail
-
safety and fault tolerance in control
systems. Current control systems differ from simple
control systems in complexity,
hierarchical
architecture, communication networks and hardware
and software diversity. Based on these properties
some new principles were introduced as fault
contamination, fault isolation, hierarchical network
design and several other principles introduci
ng new
approaches in fault tolerant system design. Examples
of aircraft and automobile systems are given.

It is more than apparent that

a

diverse range of
embedded systems is
becoming an

integral and, at

the
same time, ubiquitous part of everyday life. Even if it
is not initially obvious, their technological background
may exhibit
a
relatively high complexity. In order to
produ
ce reliable d
evices
, especially
when considering

scenarios w
here the failure could
have serious
consequences, proper attention must be given to the
education of qualified designers and specialists.


The objective of this presentation is to provide a
general introductio
n about
the

faculty (BUT FIT) and
its
organization accompanied by

some remarks on the
historical context.
Nevertheless, main attention will

be
given to different aspects of embedded systems
education and collaboration with industrial partners.
Interesting
projects and research activities will also be
discussed.

Professors



Renaat De Craemer

has
gained experience

as system
engineer at Alcatel


Antwerp (Belgium)
developing

communication electronics
used in
spacecrafts
. After
rejoining the academic world, his educational interests
included TV electronics and image processing. At
present, he is vice
-
dean of the Department of
Industrial Sciences and Technology and he is head of
the ReMI research centre.



Jean
-
Jacques Van
denbussche

has
worked

as a
design engineer at
the
Philips High End TV
Development Centre in Bruges (Belgium)

for 15 years
before rejoining the academic world. He is currently
working as an assistant professor and researcher at
the KHBO (Catholic University

College
of Bruges



Ostend). As a PhD student, h
is research focuses on
implementation and application of DSP algorithms in
FPGA technology

leading to several research papers
.
His educational interests include embedded system
design (software and hardware)
, communication
technology and mathematics of signals.



Vladimír Drábek

obtained
his PhD

in computer
science in 1980. He
is associate professor at the
Department of Computer Systems

(Faculty of
Information Science)

of the Brno University of
Technology

since 1998. From 2002 to 2007, h
e was
vice
-
dean for education at

the Faculty of Information
Technology. His research and educational interests
include: fault tolerant and fail
-
safe systems, VHDL,
data coding and compression. He is author
of
several
researc
h papers. In the 90

s,
he was studying

in Great
Britain, France and
shortly in
Belgium (IMEC
-

Leuven).



Václav Šimek

is PhD student

and teaching assistant

at the Faculty of Information
Technology

at the Brno
University of Technology.
His research and
educational
interests include: embedded systems, data
compression, digital hardware and parallel
architectures. He is author of several research papers.
In 2004 and 2005
-
2006, he studied at the KHBO as an
Erasmus student. He also

shortly studied
in France.
