Getting a Social Security Number
Fact Sheet
You are eligible for a social security
number (SSN) if you have a job on-campus or
approved off-campus work authorization. You
can apply for a SSN at the Social Security
Administration office in Eugene (see map on
back.)
Location: 2504 Oakmont Way, Eugene
Hours: M - F, 9am - 3:30pm
The Social Security Administration uses
the SAVE system to verify legal entry into the
U.S. and immigration status. The SAVE
system requires that you have an “active”
SEVIS record when applying for a SSN. If you
are a new student, you will not have an
“active” SEVIS until after you have registered
for classes and the Office of International
Affairs registers your SEVIS record and
converts it to active.
Steps to Take:
1.
F-1 students
: Download a Social
Security Verification (SSV) form and
have it signed by your employer.

J-1 students
: Download an On-Campus
Work Authorization form and have it
signed by your employer.

3.
Bring your signed form and your I-20 or
DS-2019 to the Office of International
Affairs for authorization.
4.
Apply for SSN: take the following
original documents with you:

Social Security application (download

SEVIS I-20 or DS-2019
-
Passport and I-94 Card
-
F-1 students
: signed Social Security
Verification Form
-
J-1 students
: no additional documents
required
5.
Take the receipt you receive from
Social Security to your employer or
hiring department.
6.
When you receive your SS card, take
the card to your employer or hiring
department so that a copy of the your
card may be taken.
