In 2008, SMP’s profitability was dependent upon 12 electronic ignition modules using a custom ASIC
control from Delphi


a GM Company. With GM facing bankruptcy, SMP felt this control would become
obsolete and retained me to redesign and implement a genera
l purpose microcontroller to mitigate
the
ir
risk.

In three years,
I completed and qualified eight

such microcontroller
-
based designs and associated
manufacturing documentation
. S
MP senior engineers
indicated
it had

previously taken

a team of five
engineers

a total of
four years to complete
a
single
microcontroller
ignition
design
. Even though
my
redesign effort
far

exceeded management’s

expectations, GM
subsequently
came out of bankruptcy and
SMP

shelved my
des
igns
.

Additional

career
challenges
included

as
HP entered into the video conferencing
market and
developed
their own HD streaming video over IP network
. I performed competitive

analysis on
competitor
s


conferencing system
s

to gain clients and establish
HP within the
video conferencing
market

which
incl
uded the likes of market
-
leader CISCO
. I
took the lead in developing a

measurement system with a
n

FPGA to measure the round
-
trip video latency
for the IP
connect and through various digital processing
/
video compression systems.
A patent was issued on
my

m
ethod
and device f
or its uniqueness and
usefulness
. HP went on to replicate and use this
measurement tool for device selection, software
development
,

and marketing competitive analysis. The solution was
instrumental

in landing Goldman
-
Saks
, DreamWorks
, and additional high
-
revenue generating
clients.


As HP dominated the printing market,
forecasted manufacturing from its second
-

and
third
-
generation
inkjet cartridges was enormous.
Manufacturing

faci

ties were springing up worldwide and the

upply
chain

could not
meet the demand. Due to supplier personnel, quality, and reliability issues, an HP
supply
chain

manager charged me with qualifying

a new supplier for the automatic print tester I
had previously
helped to
developed. I created new build documentat
ion with
AutoCAD
,

created acceptance

and quote
criteria
,

as well as

documentation for testing, setup, and calibration
of the

system
s

such that they were

turn
-
key

ady for startup and operation after arriving at worldwide manufacturing facilities.

As a
result of
my new documentation
,

HP
incorporate
d

software
install
discs, CE and UL certification, setup and
calibration documentation, new AutoCAD build documentation

containing
assembly instructions, new
image processing hardware and software, new flat pan
el displ
ays for user interface
into the successful
delivery of over 40 test system
s

worldwide
thereby meeting
commitment for the marketing forecast.

Initially in my career, HP inkjet technology
revolutionized

the printing market

and became a
disruptive
for
ce. I wa
s the Test Development Engineer
for testing and generating test data used to drive the entire
factory from
thin
-
film

to final assembly of the inkjet cartridges. As the startup manufacturing system
ramped up
,

HP realized a 30 percent

scrap and failure rate for the final assembly
of
inkjet cartridges. I
was tasked with improving the test process to achieve
a
two

percent scrap rate. I per
formed failure
analysis, gauge R&R studies
,

and DOE to determine root causes of the failures.
I
deve
loped

newer,
robust software for image analysis, created calibrations for diagnostic print patterns, created a new pre
-
conditioning process for energizing the print cartridge for the first time, implemented a
revolutionary
cartridge
flushing process to cle
ar particles

before diagnostic testing, created data reporting
,

and
instituted a reclaim process to recover minor failures
. In less than a
year
,

I achieved
the two

percent

scrap
goal and

transfer
red

the test improvements to HP
’s

overseas manufacturing operations. This single effort
saved the company hundreds of thousand
s

of
dollars
per

day for each manufacturing operation

and
ultimately became a
valuable
trade secret for HP
. It was
also viewed

as a green effort
as it significantl
y
reduced
the amount of scrap sent to the local landfills at each HP manufacturing site

throughout the
world
.
