created in a special cooperation on the Multimedia designer
education between Design, Communication and Interaction.
The
workshop

was

alled “3D experience design”.


Background

for the workshop

When we focused our attention on
pure modelling in
3D and
3D

animation some
of the boys liked it, but almost all the girls did not like it. So they stayed away or
did not participate in the workshop.


Problem definition

During the first workshops we realized that the girls could not see the point of
doing 3D just
for 3D’s sake.

There were no context for the 3D. We had to add in the possibility to create and
communicate things more visually.

So the subject areas added hours in to the workshop.

We defined a typically project where the students were part of a
company and
they had to visually create a house and all exterior
s

and the interior
s
. Like
decorate the walls, make furnitures etc. etc.

This lead to next idea that if a group of students created some finished houses
then they also had to have a place to s
howcase them.


Solution

So we decided to try Unity as a “world” tool. It can very easily import fbx files
from all 3D programs.

So the students can create exciting worlds
in Unity
where they can place their
houses and other objects.
Then they can publi
sh to web, upload to a webserver
and using the browser walking around and visualize the world and houses.

Finally they can also start to code part of the world. Like opening doors,
windows, adding figures etc etc. This is done in JavaScript, so this is a v
ery good
environment to learn basic programming. This can later be used in
webdevelopment.
