CONNX 8.8 Release Not
es

Overview

CONNX 8.8 expands the database support of CONNX to include VSAM files on the VSE platform.

A new component
called the CONNX Data Synchronization Tool has been added to the CONNX family of products.

This component
provides a fast and easy metho
d of creating data marts and data warehouses.

Direct support for Microsoft .NET
technology has been added to CONNX 8.8 with the introduction of a pure CONNX OLE DB Provider.

Additionally,
numerous feature requests have been implemented. The features contai
ned within this release add performance,
functionality, and ease of use to CONNX.

This release contains all previous enhancements and resolved issues.
Please see previous release notes for enhancements contained within those versions.

CONNX provides busin
esses secure read/write real
-
time access to all enterprise data from any platform as if all the
data existed in one relational database. All data is then accessible using standard SQL and any standards
-
based
application. CONNX acts as a reusable data acces
s framework for projects throughout the enterprise. CONNX supports
C
-
ISAM, VSAM, DB2, Oracle, RMS, Rdb, PostGreSQL, DBMS, Dataflex, POWER
flex
, SQL Server, Sybase, Informix,
and any OLE DB or ODBC data source. JDBC?

Here are just some of the implementation
s in which CONNX 8.8 can be utilized:

Data Migration

Web Development

Application/ Data Integration

Application Development

Ad Hoc Reporting

Data Warehousing

CONNX ODBC Client

The CONNX Client is based on an ODBC driver, which is a dynamic link library that applications call to access data
located in remote systems. The CONNX ODBC driver processes the ODBC function call
s, submits requests to the
appropriate data source, and then returns the results.

CONNX Data Dictionary

The CONNX Data Dictionary (CDD) is a repository of information about the database tables and fields accessed
through CONNX, including structure and sec
urity. It contains the metadata about the source information and provides a
GUI screen for easy and intuitive maintenance of the metadata, stored procedures, security, and views.

CONNX Data Server

The CONNX servers for Oracle DBMS, Oracle Rdb, Digital RMS

Files, DataFlex, Oracle, and DB2 are full
-
featured data
servers that translate SQL requests into native database requests. The CONNX ODBC driver makes the server
transparent to the end user. In the case of DataFlex, Oracle, and DB2 the server functions ar
e resident on the client
PC. The third
-
party driver determines the location of the server components for ODBC and OLE DB data sources.

CONNX JDBC Thin Client

The CONNX JDBC thin client allows read/write access to a CONNX data source from any client machi
ne possessing a
JDK (1.02+). JDKs exist for most platforms. The CONNX JDBC thin client is a Type 3 driver that processes the JDBC
function calls and submits requests to the CONNX JDBC Server, then returns the results.

CONNX JDBC Server

The CONNX JDBC serv
er handles requests from the CONNX JDBC thin client and accesses the target data sources.
The CONNX JDBC server component is a Microsoft Windows server component that enables access to multiple
heterogeneous data sources.

CONNX JDBC Router

The CONNX JDBC
Router component is only necessary if Web applets are served by a non
-
Windows Web server. The
router is a Java application placed on the non
-
Windows Web server. It is designed to route JDBC requests to the
CONNX JDBC server.

Chang
es in CONNX 8.8

New Features

VSAM VSE Support

CONNX provides real
-
time, high
-
performance access to VSAM files under CICS on the VSE operating system.

CONNX Data Synchronization

The CONNX Data Synchronization software allows users to easily move ente
rprise data from any source location to
any target data source. This Windows
-
based application employs a unique technique of hash keys to quickly detect
when records are updated, deleted, or inserted. By storing these hash keys, along with the primary key
of each
record, in a separate CONNX private data store, the CONNX Data Synchronization tool performs incremental
updates from source to target at a fraction of the usual, full update speed.

This tool is ideally suited for creating and maintaining data wa
rehouses and data marts. Once the target source is
populated, the engine powering the system, CONNX, an OLE DB/ODBC/JDBC driver, can be used with other tools
for ad hoc reporting, application development, and Web development. This engine provides the flexi
bility of querying
either against the data warehouse and data marts or against the live operational data sources.

Enhanced Rotated Array performance

Rotated Array processing has been accelerated in this release. This improvement will be appreciated by ma
ny
customers with Occurs clauses, including users of SCT PLUS software.

Microsoft .NET Support

CONNX now includes a native OLE DB Provider specifically designed to work with Microsoft .NET. Users get the
performance of a native provider, while writing t
heir own applications in managed C# or VB .NET code.

C
-
ISAM support expanded

Support for older versions of UNIX operating systems has been added. CONNX for C
-
SAM supports Solaris 5.6 and
above, and also AIX 4.1 and above. Additionally, support for Microf
ocus COBOL C
-
ISAM files has been enhanced.

New Data Types

Several new data types have been added for specific customers.

Resolved Issues

CONNX would intermittently crash when querying metadata tables.

RDB now returns the object table upon import (Tab
le/View/system table).

CONNX Concurrency bottleneck with ConnectionSharing resolved. (performance issue)

CONNX installation now automatically grants the "log on as a service" right to the specified service account.

CONNX n
-
tier license crash resolved.

CONNX JDBC server lockup resolved.

CONNX no longer issues an additional GetNext if complete criteria is specified for a unique key. (performance issue)

JDBC Server stability enhanced. If connection is lost to client JDBC Driver, database resources are re
leased.

SUM returning (not initialized error) resolved.

New Connection keywords added (for use by the data sync tool)

DBReadOnly= <list of comma separated logical database names>

DBReadWrite=<list of comma separated logical database names>

These k
eywords allow the data sync tool to open source databases as read
-
only, and target database as read/write
within the same aggregated connection.

JDBC java driver bug resolved. If connection is lost to the JDBC server, it would spin in an infinite loop and

also print
debugging messages.
