Introduction

A website can be defined as a cluster of various electronic files containing relevant information
that is conveyed v
ia the internet. While designing, it is critical to maintain the coherence and
usability of the web pages of a site.

Basically the websites are available in two types
-

Static website and Dynamic website.
Depending on the availability and requirements of
the web server, the designing type is
chosen. It can be purely static, purely dynamic or even quasi static or dynamic. If the
response of the site visitors needs to be stored for some analysis purpose, then dynamic sites
are the best option but if you need

to display only textual information with pictures, then a
simple static website will suffice.

Static Websites

S
tatic website
are
relatively simple to build, as the development technology is easy and they
are designed for websites that contain effective gr
aphics, downloadable images with easy
navigation and is also browser compatible. Flexibility is considered to be the major advantage
of developing a static website as the pages can be designed to match the varied layouts of the
content. Even the designers
are at free will to use any special effects in a unique style based
on the theme. But the main problem lies in the fact that it becomes difficult to change the
content unless you are well conversant with HTML and the designing methods used to develop
the s
ite. Another problem is scalability that means, with multiple products to sell, you have to
construct individual pages for each one separately. This is quite costly and time consuming.

Dynamic Websites

Dynamic pages are those web pages that are designed to

offer an interactive experience to the
users. In order to create this interactivity the designers have to use either the server side
scripting or the client side scripting languages. Many pages that are created for the website do
not exist on the server;
they are created only when a user generates a query and thus they do
not get indexed by the search engines. Dynamic design is best where the content is updated
frequently like online databases. The content is changed by executing a program or a script at
t
he time a page is requested. This gives the flexibility of changing the site according to the
needs though the costing is initially higher than designing a static site.

Part 1

Research dynamic and static websites.
Create a

What

a static website is a fixed website with no data entry

If there was and sata activity then it would be a Dynamic website

Advantages and Disadvantages to using these systems

The advantage for a dynamic website

o

You can put data straight into the web
site from a form then it will go in a data base

o

You don’t have to pay any one to sit behind the seams enter data in the page

o

Easy to use

o

Its quick and easy and secure

Disadvantages

o

Its very costly

o

Its time consuming

o

It could go down with you know knowin

There is a program called contribute and it is own by adobe this can be configured to
Dreamweaver so web

developers

don’t have to come in and add information on there site
all the time

It will add the source code you

must have the software.
.

It is easy to use and you do not need to use a cms as well

it

is really flexible

you are offering.

Part
2

Macromedia’s Contribute integrates tightly with Dreamweaver. Research this tool.

To do so, you
are required to look up suitable literature/ forum / help files.

1.

Explain what
Contribute does. Show the relationship between Contribute and
Dreamweaver. How does Contribute handle a html page that is based on a Dreamweaver
template (dwt) file (Hint: What happens with the editable regions?)

2.

Research how Contribute is configured thro
ugh Dreamweaver and by the
webadmin/webmaster

-

What roles or privileges does the Administrator have and this context ?
they would have
full cont
rol then a standed user

-

Describe what an enduser has to do before he can begin editing content on a site?

must have permission to edit any content

To be considered for Credit/ Distinction:

C
ase scenario:

ACME Inc.
has a webmaster who manages the company’s website using Dreamweaver.
Templates are in place to automate processes. With an increasing volume of

content
published from the Marketing department, 3 copies of Contribute are bought.

-

Provide a sample scenario of the stakeholders and the problems that could have led up to
the decision to purchase Contribute licenses. Consider points of site ownership

and
bottleneck issues.

-

Provide a flowchart of a typical workflow of document creation

-

What happens when
pressrelease020909.htm

is being opened by user ‘

can the
other users open this document?

Part 3

You have been asked to wor
k out th
e best approach for these

client
s who want

to get an online
presence. Read through the scenario
s

below, then write your recommendations on what system
you would choose. Justify your decision.

A.

The site is for a small business, being a handicraft store in
Katoomba. The business owner
only wants to general listing of her products (in broad terms). She also offers workshops
around 3,4 times per year which she wants to advertise on the site. The site is mainly a
contact point with a sitemap “How to find us”.

The client is not very tech
-
savvy and rather uncomfortable doing any updates herself, and
she advised she would continue seeking your services for any changes.

B.

Bright Spark

has a number of shops in the western NSW rural regions, selling electrical
goods
. The company is expanding quickly and the company is now considering placing
their full product catalogue online. Several Bright Spark employees will be involved with
updating the website. The content turnaround will be constant and fairly quickly,
as
the
re is
a planned Newsflash section.

In addition, they want the following features:

Contact us form

Searchable catalogue

Log
-
in for Resellers

Newsletter (on subscription), with customer sign
-
up functionality

C.

To be considered for
Distinction

(hands
-

ponent):

You may use one of the sites you are working on.

a.
Choose an interactive component (Form, log in screen etc)
and build it.

b.
Show the following:

What:
What component did you choose?

How: How did you build your component (explain: using fo
rms? Using PHP? Using CGI?)

Why: Why did you choose the ‘logic’, the interactive, dynamic script or solution?

.

Part 4

Attached is a list of Content Management Systems. Choose two (either from the list, or you may
use a diff
erent one) and investigate its possibilities.

NOTE:

This will not require you to download, install etc a system. Rather, you are required to
consider this to be a research step before choosing a system. So the emphasis is on reading
through specs documen
ts, even user forums as well as using any live demos to base decisions

on.

You are now r
equired to compare two systems. Think about

IMPORTANT! Information about handing in your finished work

Either A

I recommend using a folder

(the real li
fe hardcopy type)
for your assignment, then hand in your
folder when everything is completed. Use the
Moodle D
ropbox to upload a
notepad or Word
document that states the date you have handed in your folder.

Or B

Upload a softcopy of your entire assignmen
t onto the Moodle dropbox and I will pick it up from
there.

Make sure your assignment has your name on it!

Not using the
Moodle
dropbox is equivalent to not handing in your task!
