At Adolf Würth GmbH & Co. KG, specialist in industrial fastenings for professional
use, increased business volumes generated by the company’s web shop and field
sales force were taxing existing infrastructure to its limit. With 3,500 users
depending on SAP applications, the company wanted to find a way to upgrade to a
more powerful infrastructure without interrupting mission

critical daily operations.

Solution:

Adolf Würth GmbH & Co. KG chose to upgrade from POWER6 to POWER7
processor

based systems using IBM Live Partition Mobility. The entire
infrastructure upgrade and transition process (covering 80 logical partitions on IBM
Power servers) took less than four months, and thanks to LPM did not affect the
3,500 SAP users.

Compared with conventional methods, the platform modernization effort was very
low and the procedure avoided weekend work. Using the IBM virtualization

FDM4 International Inc. (FDM4) was experiencing performance and scaling issues with its older IBM
Power Systems servers
. With other challenges such as supporting more current releases of
the IBM
AIX operating system and reducing power consumption, the company needed to upgrade its server
infrastructure.


Solution:

With help from IBM, FDM4 replaced its current IBM Power Systems servers with an IBM Power 720
Express eight
-
core server and an IBM Power 750 Express 16
-
core server, both running the IBM AIX
Standard Edition V6.1 operating system. The client upgraded to the Power 750 Express server because
there is no cap on resources for development. The Power 720 Express server was used as a backup
and test server.


IBM PowerVM Standard Edition software was also installed and used to partition the servers into
unique development instances. FDM4 has many developer instances, and at any one time there could
be 25 to 100 partitions running on the system. Additionally, IBM Systems Director Edition
-

Standard
software was used to monitor and report energy usage back to the administrator on a trial basis.


Benefits:



Increased power and the ability to scale up to 160 partitions, which addressed the client's performance
and scalability challenges.

The Opportunity


Fossil, Inc. wants to launch more than 30 e
-
sites over the next three years for its brands and
brand partners. Its data dictionary was inconsistent between the sites and required
standardization throughout. In addition to these technical challenges, new processes for the
user interface and creative teams needed to deliver component
-
based assets.


With help from IBM and IBM Business Partners, Perficient and Sirius, Fossil installed IBM
WebSphere Commerce Enterprise V6 on two POWER 750 servers to provide the core solution
through its extend sites model. IBM created the Fossil AssetStore application, across which all
e
-
sites extend and which contains reusable HTML and JavaScript languages. This minimized the
need for additional asset development for any e
-
site and decreased the demand for Cascading
Style Sheets (CSS), content and images.


Real Business Results

The new solution helped enable Fossil to efficiently and predictably launch brand
and brand partner sites. The solution provided a unified development environment
with 100 percent user agent compatibility. They have also added capacity to meet

the IBM Insight Tool. Chose the IBM POWER platform to meet consolidation targets and apply latest

Benefits:


The number of physical servers was reduced by 95 percent, from 80 servers to four. Average server
utilization improved by up to 60 percent. The customer is able to deliver SAP application services at a
lower cost to its lines of business while reducing its total costs of ownership. The customer can respond
much faster to changing loads and SAP instance requirements, for example: tTemporary SAP test
environments can be deployed in minutes compared to days or even weeks and load peaks can be
