XAMPP and Netbeans on Windows

A great environment to lean PHP or even Java development on Windows is very easy to install.

Software needed


-
Java SE (77MB - jdk-6u21-windows-i586.exe)

-
XAMPP (54MB - xampp-3in32-1.7.3.exe)

-
XAMP Tomcat addon (optional) (30MB - xampp-tomcat-addon-win32-6.0.20.exe)

-
Netbeans Full Install (326MB - netbeans-6.9.1-ml-windows.exe)



Download and Install Java SE.



-
Go to website www.oracle.com.

-
Click on downloads.

-
Click on Java SE.

-
Click on download JDK.

-
Select platform Windows.

-
Click on Continue.

-
Click on file presented and save it (eg jdk-6u21-windows-i586.exe).

-
Once it has been downloaded run the exe (by double clicking on it for example).

-
Follow all of the prompts and use the defaults as presented during installation (by clicking
Next, Next, Next and then Finish).

-
A web page will open up allowing you to register. Ignore this. Close the web page.




Download and Install XAMPP



-
Go to website www.apachefriends.org.

-
Click on on orange icon at the top of the screen labelled XAMPP

-
Click on XAMPP for Windows

-
Click on XAMPP under the download heading.

-
Click on EXE and save it (eg xampp-win32-1.7.3.exe).

-
Once it has been downloaded run the exe (by double clicking on on it for example).

-
Follow all of the prompts and use the defaults as presented during installation (leave the
destination folder as c:).

-
When the installation has finished a DOS window will appear asking a number of
questions.

-
"Add shortcuts to desktop = y".

-
"Should I locate the XAMPP paths correctly? = y".

-
"Should I make a portable XAMPP without drive letters? = n".

-
Press enter to continue.

A message will appear saying "I have set the timezone ....." Press enter to continue.

Type X to Exit and press enter (the DOS window will disappear).




Optionally Download and Install Tomcat add-on for XAMPP

Go to website www.apachefriends.org.

-
Click on on orange icon at the top of the screen labelled XAMPP.

Click on XAMPP for Windows.

Click on XAMPP Add-Ons.

Under the Tomcat add-on click on EXE and save it (eg
xampp-tomcat-addon-win32-6.0.20.exe).

Once it has been downloaded run the exe (by double clicking on on it for example).

Follow all of the prompts and use the defaults as presented during installation (leave the
destination foler as c:xampp).

-
When the installation has finished a DOS window will appear indicating "I have found
some updates. Should I install them now?". Press enter to continue the installation of the
updates.

Type X to Exit and press enter (the DOS window will disappear).





Start XAMPP



-
Click on Start.

-
Click on All Programs.

-
Click on XAMPP for Windows.

-
Click on XAMPP Control Panel.

-
The control panel will appear.

-
Click on the Start button next to Tomcat (towards the bottom of the list).

-
Click on the Start button next to Apache.

-
Click on the Start button next to MySQL.

-
(If you click on the Admin buttons you may be asked for a user ID and password. Try
XAMPP and XAMPP)

-
Start a browser such as Firefox or Internet Explorer.

-
Go to localhost or http://localhost.

-
You should see an XAMPP page with a list of languagaes to select.

-
Click on English.

-
You should see the XAMPP welcome screen.

Download and Install Netbeans

Go to website netbeans.org/downloads.

-
Click on the download button under ALL (319MB).

-
Save it somewhere.

-
Once it has been downloaded run the exe (by double clicking on on it for example).

-
Click on Next (notice Tomcat will not be installed because we have already installed it
above).

-
Click on the tickbox "I accept the terms in the license agreement" and click on Next.

-
Leave the destination folder and JDK folder as defaulted and click on Next.

-
Leave the GlassFish destination folder as defaulted and click on Next.

-
Click on Install. This will take quite a while (5-10 minutes).

-
Remove the tickboxes from "Contribute to the Netbeans...." and "Register the
Netbeans...." and click on Finish.




Start Netbeans



-
Click on Start.

-
Click on All Programs.

-
Click on Netbeans.

-
Click on Netbeans IDE 6.9.1




Configure Tomcat as a server under Netbeans

Given we chose to install Tomcat as part of XAMPP we now need to tell Netbeans where
Tomcat is.


-
Start Netbeans if it isn't already started.

-
Click on Tools.

-
Click on Servers.

-
Click on Add Server.

-
Click on Tomcat 6.0

-
Type Server Location c:xampptomcat

-
Username = XAMPP

-
Password = XAMPP

-
Click on Finish.
