understanding the genomics, proteomics and metabolomics of

order to enhance and control its ability to degrade
wastes

and produce butanol. The

This program centers around the di
scovery of new peptide

based
materials for
recognition of a variety of target materials,
including
biolog
ical threat agents and
inorganic systems. These synthetic recognition e
lements (SREs), as we define them,
are elements bio

engineered from nature’s building blocks (i.e., peptide, DNA) to

improved performance of the reagents generated. This ‘controlled discovery’ is

Researchers working on this project will gain experience in
molecular and
microbiology techniques, and benefit from an interdisciplinary research experience in
the discovery of new peptide materials for the next generation of sensos and electronic
devices.

reagent technology (i.e., the use of antibodies) to include

e. In addition, this suite of competencies addresses a
critical gap in the time it currently takes to develop new reagents. A rapid response to
new and emerging threats can now be achieved in days, not a time

evelopment of antibody reagents.
The biomaterials discovery
capabilities provides DoD with a rapid means to detect new emerging threats, but could
also provide a means to produce the hybrid materials of the future for sensor as well as
other electronic de
vices.
