(Send li

Note

Tung might be removed from our
group,

as another group needs extra members
. I
n
which case the Chief Coder position will have to be delegated to another
group
member.

Current
Research

Everyone in the group has been busy researching existing

Each

person has produced a document summarising their own research

o

Martin to collate these documents together to produce an initial
‘formal research’ document

Tung, H
anxing and Zenan have each provided accounts of
how they learnt
English

o

We can examine these processes and techniques to help develop
our app

Future Research

Research proposed by Martin

two main categories of research split into
individual sections

Res
earch on learning another language and tools to aid this

Question native Chinese speakers (Hanxing and Zenan have provided
some of this information already)

Question lecturers at the University teaching foreign languages
(preferably Chinese)

Question stude
nts at the University currently learning a foreign language

Research into existing apps

Our own group research (completed)

Question CS
-
Students

Question Non
-
CS Students

Question individuals currently learning a language using an app (some of
us know
specific people)

Research to be confirmed by the group and split up as necessary

Martin and Daniel to produce a questionnaire for a) Lecturers and the University
b) Students studying a language at the University

If this can be done before Tuesday and sent

to Rong, she can help us
approach people inside the University to question them

Can
others in the group

take one of the othe
r five

research topics and share
which they have chosen on Facebook please
!

This research needs to be
underway by next Thursday at

the very latest for our next meeting with
Rong

Other To
-
Dos

Matt to start on the website, initial plan

Daniel to begin making wireframes for the GUI

Martin to make flowchart for program processes (alongside Daniel’s GUI)

All group members to carry on lea
rning to code in Android as we need to
start prototyping ASAP

o

Joe has posted a useful tutorial on the Facebook group which is
free and easy to follow

o

Rong is keen for us to get feedback on our product early on, so we
need to start rapid prototyping

After
Thoughts

comments by Martin

We need to make sure we are all using the same compiler to compile our
java code

o

Facebook has just released their own ‘super efficient’ compiler
called Buck

o

Tung can you research Buck and see if we can use it for our
application?

We also need to come up with some

good

coding practices

so if a group
member is editing another group members code we can all see what is
going on

o

Joe, can you look into this and produce some rules for us to follow?

o

There are many different
coding practices so maybe as a group we
should vote on how we want our code to look

o

Also commenting anything that isn’t self explanatory is key to
quick code maintenance

As we are able to have a dedicated Debugger and Tester, Hanxing can you
research the b
est ways for us to test our app?

o

Test driven development is very popular so perhaps you and Tung
can work together

on deciding this

o

There is likely some kind of testing harness built for android
development

o

It would be good to know how we are going to deve
lop our code
from early on (e.g. maybe writing test cases first and then writing
the code to pass the test cases as TDD suggests)

Also from early on it’s a good idea to have an official document for what
will happen if a group member doesn’t complete their

task in the given
timeframe

October 2013

o

It’s a touchy subject but it would be good for us all to be upfront
about it

o

Joe and Martin can work together and come up with this document

Matt, can you find out where our website has to be placed. I.e. on the
school’s serve
r somewhere or can we host it anywhere?

Daniel, I’m not sure which wireframe Software is available for
Android
development, but it would be good to know early on so we can install the
Software on all of our machines

o

So when you find out which one you want
to use, let us know on
Facebook
so we can install it too

Everyone can breathe a sigh of relief as Tung is staying in our group!

Our group meeting with Rong has been changed to Thursdays at 1’oclock
(13:00) in C71, we will have our non
-
supervised group
meetings on
Tuesdays at 1’oclock (13:00) in the CS Atrium as last week.

If anyone can think of anything I’ve missed please let me know and I’ll add it on!
