Many viral diseases, such as smallpox and polio, cannot be treated
effectively with existing drugs. Instead, they are combated by

vention, using vaccines. A traditional
vaccine

Some new vaccines are being produced using a technology called
genetic engineering. Genetic engineering usually involves the
transfer o
f genes from one organism to another. Genetically
engineered vaccines are more carefully designed than traditional
vaccines, and thus may be safer. They may also prevent diseases
that were not preventable before.
