In 2009 and 2010, magnetic surveys have been performed to measure the 14 repeat stations in
Austria, respectively. This repeat station network was established in the late 1990s.

The observatory data of Wien
-
Cobenzl (WIK) ser
ves for reduction purposes. From 2008 on, a
digital suspended dIdD system from GEM has been providing the reference values. Recently,
another digital magnetometer, type LEMI, was installed. It is briefly reported on the operation
of these two instruments.

A software was developed (Wolfram Mathematica / Python Programming) for the baseline
determination of the two digital instruments from absolute measurements. The baseline is
calculated by a Cubic Spline approximation using the full vector modulation. Afte
r revision,
the repeat station data 2009 and 2010 will be forwarded to the WDC Edinburgh, in the
MagNetE format.

The recent survey data are used to compute the present magnetic field in Austria and to
update the geomagnetic maps. Frequently, the Austrian G
eomagnetic Service is asked to
provide magnetic declination data and maps for navigation purposes. The recent trend of
secular variation of D is presented.

In 2010, the construction of a new geomagnetic observatory

has started
, at a site next to the
moder
n Conrad observatory in Austria’s mountains. Magnetic recording will take place in
underground tunnels, by reasons of temperature stability. It is reported on the current
construction progress.
