Session 1

The

maps

and

records

of

the

various

old

cadastres

of

pre
-
unity

Italian

regional

states

and

of

the

post
-
unity

Kingdom

of

Italy,

produced

by

both

central

and

local

offices
,

responsible

for

the

surveying

and

activation

of

cadastres,

are

today

preserved

in

the

State

Archives
.

The

Italian

archival

administration

preserves

a

priceless

heritage
,

increasingly

consulted

over

the

years

by

a

growing

number

of

researchers

and

institutional

users

whose

expertise

is

related

to

studying

the

territory
.

Based on the data gathered by the
information systems of the State Archives, the
estimated number of
cadastral maps
available
amounts

to over 500.000 units
.

A limited part of these were reproduced by
microfilming and traditional
photography

during the last twenty years of
the 20
th

century by some State Archives for
security purposes, both for the provision of
hard copies to users and to replace direct
consultation in order to avoid any damage to
original documents.

ITALIAN STATE ARCHIVES

The

first

significant

experiences

in

digital

reproduction

of

this

material,

without

any

intermediate

photographical

support,

date

back

to

the

second

half

of

the

Nineties
.

Since

then,

new

technologies

for

high
-
resolution

colour

reproduction

have

been

developed
:

digital

camera
-
backs

and

scanners

suitable

for

large
-
sized

originals

like

cartographic

materials

and

cadastral

maps
.

From

1997

to

2000

the

General

Directorate

of

Archives

funds

pioneer

projects

(
Imago

Projects
)

in

the

archives

of

Milan
,

Rome,

Cagliari,

Venice
,

Turin

aimed

at

the

digital

reproduction

of

whole

series

of

cadastral

maps

and

historical

collections

of

topographical

maps
.

Imago

projects

have

been

successful

in

replacing

traditional

photographic

techniques

by

digital

reproduction
.

ITALIAN STATE ARCHIVES

IMAGO PROJECTS

In this process,
the Imago projects
have originated the first databases

of
archival descriptions

of the digitized
fonds and collections.

The
Imago Projects were

furthermore
complemented by

Content
Management Systems

(CMS) suited for
the local networks of the single Institutes,
provided with full
-
text search engine and
viewer for
high resolution

digital
reproductions.

More

recently,

other

State

Archives

have

undertaken

projects

aimed

exclusively

at

making

digital

reproductions

of

cadastral

map

series
.

According

to

a

survey

of

the

digitization

projects,

carried

out

in

2008
,

150
.
000

sheets

of

maps

had

already

been

reproduced

at

that

time
.

Today,

only

a

few

of

these

digital

repositories

are

involved

in

projects

aimed

at

online

publication
.

ITALIAN STATE ARCHIVES

Here

we

want

to

provide

a

general

overview

of

the

most

important

projects

promoted

by

the

Italian

State

Archives,

aimed

at

the

online

publication

of

cadastral

maps

series
.

All the information is derived mainly from
the presentations of individual projects,
which are to be referred to for further
investigations.

The various projects have been developed
along
specific guidelines originated by
different operational contexts
. Some of
them are based on partnerships with local
universities or administrations.

A key component of each project is the
creation of a
Content Management
System integrating:

forms to present the archival
descriptions
,

search engine
allowing

both generic
and contextual searches,

viewer for high resolution digital
reproductions.

ITALIAN STATE ARCHIVES

The project
Online
Cadaster
, carried out by the
State Archive of Trieste
, is
aimed at
reproducing and publishing online the whole
series of Franciscan Cadastre maps and
records.
The
purpose

is to

establish international
agreements

to
promote Web access to the
documentary heritage
related to territories today
belonging to

the foreign states of Slovenija and
Croatia
.

During the
period 2004
-
2006 the Project
enabled to create a data
-
base for searching
and accessing through a local network 8.279
digital reproductions of maps

related to
territories included in the

province “Litorale”
Adriatic (Adriatic East Coast).

Series published on the Website
:

Franciscan cadastre
-

maps of municipalities
in the province of Trieste, and in the districts
of Labin, Duino and Koper

(
200 maps units
);

Franciscan Cadastre land register records of
municipalities in the districts of Labin, Duino
and Koper

digitalized during the pilot phase.

The second phase of the project will include:

The digital reproduction of the whole series
of land register records
, consisting of 2005
volumes
(about 400,000 images).

The publication on the website of the
reproduced maps and land register records

of
the other territories included in the province Litorale.

NATIONAL ARCHIVE SYSTEM

As
new centers for the conservation
and exploitation of archives keep
spreading nationwide
, the Archival
Administration has set up occasions for a
fruitful exchange of ideas and the building up
of proposals on how
to develop the
coordination and connection among the
different players
.

The result has been the design of a
NATIONAL ARCHIVE SYSTEM
to be set in
place in the near future with its
governing
bodies at national level
,
coordination
committees at regional level

and
archival preservation
or

service
providing centers at local level
.

The essential element
in the

NATIONAL
ARCHIVES SYSTEM (SAN) will be its
digital projection, a NATIONAL
ARCHIVES

PORTAL

(NAP)
which will act as

the single point of access to national
archival resources,
while respecting the

autonomy and specificity of the various
local systems
that may be further
enhanced
.

The NATIONAL ARCHIVES

PORTAL

will

provide orientation to the users
on how to approach the national
archive system, by means of a set
of basic information ;

develop tools for common access,
standards and work tools to be
proposed to the national archival
community.

include sub
-
portals dedicated to
thematic areas:
among those which
are going to be built there is a

Sub
-
portal expressly dedicated to
Territories and Cartography.

The National Sub
-
portal
dedicated to

Territories and Cartography,
will give access to
archival information data
-
sets and digital
repositories of the existing projects.

The State Archives of Milano and Trieste are
the first ones involved.

The Italian Web Portal of Cartographic and
Cadastral Sources

will enable

to access the
following contents:

digitized cadastral map series

digitized cartographical collections

archival descriptions EAD compliant

The Portal provides

furthermore

the following
functions:

tree structure representation as a
navigation way through the archival fonds,
series and units,

full
-
text search engine allowing both
generic and contextual searches,

viewer tool for navigating high resolution
images efficiently,

gallery of thumbnail images showing the
maps sheets in a simply sequential way
rapidly
researchable and consultable by the users
.
