DS6800 POWER DOWN/UP PROCEDURE

1

POWERING OFF

Press and hold the power button that is located on the rear operator panel of the
server enclosure for 5 seconds
. The unit powers off the server enclosure and each of the
attached expansion enclosures in sequential order. Once the server enc
losure has
completely powered off, the power
-
off sequence continues down the line of attached
expansion enclosures. Each expansion enclosure powers off the enclosed resources in the
necessary order before the power
-
off sequence continues to the next attach
ed expansion
enclosure.
A delay of several minutes can occur before the system fully powers off all
the enclosures depending on how many attached expansion enclosures are
connected.

An enclosure is completely powered off after the fans have stopped spinn
ing, the DC
LED indicator on the power supply is flashing, and the AC LED indicator on the power
supply is a solid green light. The power
-
on LED indicators on both the rear operator
panel and the front display panel flash intermittently after the enclosure

has powered off.

To disconnect electrical power, disconnect the power cables that are in the back of the
unit. Reverse the procedure if restoring power.

POWERING ON

Perform the following steps to turn on the power for the initial startup of the DS
6000:

1.

Verify that all communication, interenclosure connections, and power cables are
plugged into the back of the enclosures and properly grounded ac electrical
outlets.

2.

Verify that all disk drive modules are locked securely in place.

Note:
Ensure th
at at least four disk drive modules are present before you start the

DS6000.

3.

Check the system documentation for the external hardware devices that you
intend to power up, and then determine the proper startup sequence. Use the
following power
-
on seque
nce, where it is applicable:

a.

Turn on the power to the supporting devices (for example, Ethernet
switches and management stations) before the server enclosure.

b.

Turn on the server enclosure by pressing the power button that is located
on the left side of t
he rear operator panel.

Notes:

1)

The unit powers on the server enclosure and then automatically
powers on the attached expansion enclosures in the necessary
sequence.

2)

If you are powering on a new enclosure, or if the enclosure has
been powered down long

enough for the battery backup unit
(BBU) to lose its charge, the BBU might need to build a charge
before the storage unit is fully functional. This can take up to two
and one
-
half hours. The storage unit might not be able to
communicate with the DS Storag
e Manager while the BBUs
charge.

3)

After powering on the enclosure, the information indicator flashes
to indicate that the system is initializing and is not yet ready to be
accessed by either the management console or host systems.
Initialization is complet
e, and the system is ready for I/O, once
the flashing amber light turns off.

CAUTION:

Upon power on, a process is initiated to detect all hardware. This
process can take an extensive amount of time, depending on the
number and type of attachments. You
must wait until this process
is complete before initiating any other processes.
