Persuasive language...
What is it?
Persuasive language uses certain ‘tricks’
to encourage people to do something,
buy something or believe something.
Remember in your brochure you are
persuading people to come and visit the
wonderful city of Pompeii
The Tricks
•
Rhetorical questions
•
Repetition
•
Alliteration
•
Exaggeration
•
Emotive language
•
Similes
–
when two things that are not a like
are compared
.
i.e
she was like a rose.
•
Metaphors
-
a
figure of speech in which a term
or phrase is applied to something to which it is
not
accurately
applicable in order to suggest a
resemblance, as in
he laughed like a hyena.
Persuasive language...
Definition of Persuasive language:
To influence, win over, convince.
What words can you think of to persuade
people to come to Pompeii?
Example
–
Streets and shops
(page 22)
The Romans made their streets with stone and
built high pavements on each side to keep
people clear of the carts going up and down.
To persuade the Romans to visit you could say...
The solid stone streets of Pompeii are lined
with the most amazing shops that sell goods
from all around the globe, why not come along
and choose a souvenir to last a lifetime?
Example
–
The Amphitheatre
(page 30)
Read the paragraph and think about how might
you persuade people to visit
Pompeii
because
of the
amphitheatre
To persuade the Romans to visit you could say...
When you visit the amphitheatre you are able
to watch fights to the death between daring
gladiators and wild animals, its amazing, you
won’t want to miss it!
Practice Task (10 mins)
•
In your books write a couple of sentences about
the places you can see in
Pompeii
to practice
your
persuasive writing skills.
Some of you
might want to use a thesaurus to help you use
some really good words.
•
Do what to hear my world famous dinosaur
joke?
