IBM has been a pretty good company for us. In 2010 their overall revenue was 99,871,000. In 2011 it
increased

to 106,916,000. We have started this challenge with IBM as one of our stocks and have stuck
with them ever since. They aren’t necessarily our strongest company but we have been able to count on
them for money.

IBM has got a message for
Oracle

customers: we've made it so easy for you to move.

IBM's next big database, DB2 10, will be out out on April 30 and IBM has gone on the offensive
to win Oracle's customers.

"I
t is lower cost, better performance than the Oracle database and is is 98% code compatible with
Oracle. We want to make it easy to move to DB2," IBM strategy director Bernie Spang told
Business Insider
.

That's the sticking point. Database customers don't want to move from one database to another
because its a big freaking nightmare to do so. But IBM has been trying to make it easy for
switchers for years. The previous ver
sion of DB2 was supposedly 95% percent compatible with
Oracle. This time, IBM claims that customers can simply plop 98% of their data from Oracle to
DB2 with no effort and no special training.

IBM also wants customers to know that it hasn't turned
SAP

into an enemy like Oracle has. It
promises its new database makes SAP business software work faster than Oracle. Coca
-
Cola
switched to DB2 10 and SAP worked up to 60% faster, it says.

D
B2 10 is not an in
-
memory database, so Spang says it doesn't compete with SAP HANA.

It does include more features to work with big data projects like Hadoop and a new analytics
engine to analyze real
-
time data directly.

But IBM also has company. Microsoft's newest database
SQL Server 2012

has also begun
shipping.

This article is about IBM’s new

database. Their new database called DB2 10 comes out
April 30
th
. Their goal is to try to win Oracles customers over and have more people join
their database.

2011 Earnings: Fourth Quarter

I.B.M. is the largest single supplier of information technology to corporations worldwide, selling more
than $100 billion a year in services, software an
d hardware to businesses and governments. Profits,
more than sales growth, have been the big technology
company’s focus in recent years

The company delivered a steady performance in the fourth quarter of 2011, reporting profits that easily
surpassed Wall S
treet forecasts. Sales were just below analysts’ estimates, weighed down by a
slowdown in mainframe sales, compared with the previous year when new models were introduced.

The company reported that its net income rose 4 percent, to $5.5 billion. But its op
erating earnings per
share rose 11 percent to $4.71 a share. There were far fewer outstanding shares than a year earlier after
I.B.M. spent billions to buy back shares in 2011.

The quarterly result was well above the $4.62
-
a
-
share average estimate of Wall
Street analysts, as
compiled by Thomson Reuters.

I.B.M.’s revenue rose 2 percent to $29.5 billion, but it fell short of analysts’ forecast of $29.7 billion.

Virginia M. Rometty, I.B.M.’s chief executive, called the quarterly performance a “strong” finish
to a year
of record earnings per share, revenue and profit.

In recent years, I.B.M. has shed more cyclical hardware businesses like personal computer and disk
drives, while stepping up its investment in more stable services and software businesses. It has
been
aggressive in tapping fast
-
growing markets abroad, while developing new businesses, like analytics
software that helps companies sift through data for insights about how to cut costs and help sales.

-

This is about
IBM’s 4th quarter earnings. In this it

says that IBM’s earnings have surged pasts
what Wall Street expected them to do. This is showing that IBM is a very powerful company.
