Exploring the Asset Management Lifecycle

Define “asset”:

In business and accounting, assets are everything of value that is owned by a person or
company.

*Wikipedia

What is “asset management”:

Asset management is a business process and a decision
-
making framework that covers
an extended time horizon, draws from economics as well as engineering, and considers a
broad range of assets. The asset management approach incorporates the economic
assessment of trade
-
offs among alternative investment options and uses this information
to help make cost
-
effective investment decisions.

Management

Ministries must identify and manage any asset maintenance, risk and liability issues arising from their
contracting activities.

Where assets are determined to be owned by the Province, they must be appropriately safeguarded,
controlled and accounted for. Assets being replaced due to being damaged, lost or stolen must be
reported on the General Incident or Loss Report CPPM M, Loss Reporting

Ministries must not fund a contractor's amortization as part of a contractor's administration costs for the
contractor's assets acquired with government funding.

How To: Asset Management (Space Shuttle View)

Don't take a shortcut on education (process and technical)

Gather your team. Don't forget your “customers”.

Document today's business processes

Tells us what to tackle AND what can be consolidated/eliminated

Focus on the flames but DO NOT forget the infrastructure

Grab the ROI, attack the vulnerabilities

Business processes in place to keep accurate asset information

Build an accurate asset accounting. Use asset discovery (inventory)

There are no easy ways out. Do it right.

Asset Management Software

Just the facts please

One solution for all asset areas

Asset convergence is not just marketing hype

Easily configured integration to other systems

Unless you are also looking at Financials, HR, LDAP, etc.

Robust workflow engine so those business processes can be automated

Capable of a high degree of
configurability

(“out of the box” this ain't)

Single repository for all data (Allow for “Federation”
-

see integration above)

Upgradability

You're going to spend considerable time configuring the solution

Technology will not stand still because your asset management system does
