Lecture Capture:

Steve Clark upgrade the cameras and sensors in Smi
th 202 to address several problems
we have been encountering with the Lecture capture.

We continue to have

some issues with the system in
Smith 202 including:

the clarity of the video of the whiteboard; the audio pick up is poor when the
instructors m
ove around the front; the Polycom camera in the back is being selected as the primary video
but is not catching the instructor moving around; loss of data written to the secondary disk in the podium
systems.

Some of these issues are due to the complexity
and limitation of the technology such as

when

to
choose the ceiling camera versus the rear one, the limitation of the floor sensors.

PC Upgrade and Refresh:

Terry is coordinating the upgrade process with the 450

systems that will get
the large hard dri
ve and additional memory.

The upgrade process is now in motion.

PCS is helping.

The
plan is depicted below:

A request for 100 Optiplex 760 headless workstations has been give to Jay Dominick for the bulk buy.
Some number of these will

be funded from the Provost while the
other will be funded by Mosaic.

Rodney continues tracking with Microsoft

the problem with OneNote

(this is the problem in

Woodward
140 podium Mosaic PC that Dr. Ivan Howitt uses).

A non
-
Mosaic Windows PC is set up in CARC 235 connected to the networ
k and running logged in to
Groove.

This enables all members of Dr. Gary Wilson’s

class to upload and share documents.

No progress on the weather station on the CARC roof and the acquisition of data from it so it can be
displayed on our CARC 101 digital d
isplay. This is an initiative from

Dr. Saunders of Civil.

The effort by facilities to determine the cause and the repair of the CARC window water leakage has been
awaiting resolution (mainly funding).

We continue dealing with very large number of

applicat
ion install for the faculty. Some are not really
appropriate for College wide deployment. Continue to monitor and track the plethora of

projects across
Mosaic, PCS and with Support.

Terry is continuing with Primary and Secondary workstation deployment for

faculty and staff.

The

pilot of the POST Award system with the CCI group is in progress.

The pilot will end at the end of
June 2009.

The current consensuses

is to release this to the entire campus.

Jay Dominick is the project
owner.

Working with De
ll on refresh of demo units;

with Apple as well; with Lenovo as well.

Have reached out
to Nichole Gallagher at Dell to meet on

the Student

Computing initiative.

Meeting with the TA and PCS

Support TA, Armando and Sean.

The Remote Access via SSLVPN pil
ot is in progress with about 20 members. The pilot will end Feb 20 at
which time we will assess if it has been successful and decide if we are prepared to support this service on a
wider scale..

I am continuing to work with Dr. Wang and his researcher to u
se VCL at NCSU with

ArcGIS.

Armando is working to resolve the issues with the old cart.

We had a

meeting with the architects and Dan Rowe to review the Mosaic lab and server room, storage
room requirements

in the new EPIC building. Dan and I also met wi
th Jay and Tom of ITS to review their
strategy on data ports in the EPIC building.

Working on getting the TA members to use the Web time submission system.

Customer Support:

The Mosaic TA are working with me in updating all the Application Help Files.

I

am reviewing these and
updating/cleaning up AppDB

Armando is working to get Duke 242 set up for 7*24 availability. The web cams are installed and now we

need to get the network lines set up.

Armando and Sean

continues working with the team on support is
sues.

Armando continues developing and shaping

the Mosaic Help Desk and Mosaic TA staff.

Armando is also
overseeing the PCS Help Desk and staffing.

Chad DeWitt:

-----------------

-

Helped Nan Bousaba on her SQL issue

Nan wanted SQL Express (ak
a Microsoft SQL Desktop Edition [MSDE]) enabled on Mosaic machines.

MSDE is installed with Visual Studio and due to various technical and security issues, is disabled.

My suggestion was for her to get a standalone machine and run SQL Express.

(She had

already

received a standalone machine and it is located in Colvard.)

I then documented general e
-
mail

instructions to get her up and running.

While this is a standalone (i.e. non
-
Mosaic supported),

I did offer her general help, if needed.

-

Writing co
de to add users to the local Remote Desktop Users group

I am currently writing C# code that takes in a tab delimited, dual column text file that contains

usernames and machines.

We have yet to determine exactly where the data will come from,

but at this

point that does not affect the behavior of the program.

-

Worked with Wes to decomission the Panopto server

The COE Panopto server was shutdown and turned over to Jason for use as a Linux server.

-

Wrote code to check environment for BioWin menu link

An iss
ue arose this week where users were having issues finding the BioWin icon on several

machines.

I wrote code that checked machines to ensure the BioWin icons were located in the

machines’ menus.

I found that 94 machines did not have the link.

-

Resolved t
he BioWin menu link for 94 machines

I wrote code to deploy the link.

Do keep in mind, this actually indicates a larger issue

As it appears these 94 machines did not update their menus during the last update.

Wes,

Rodney and I are looking at the issue.

-

U
pdated iTunes MSI files (again)

iTunes has not yet been released.

(It’s slated for the next release on February 13
th
, 2009.)

In the meantime, Apple released another iTunes dot version.

That being the case, I have

updated the MSI files to ensure the most
recent version goes out when we deploy.

-

Helped Rodney on machine RAM data

The current method of getting the amount of physical RAM in a machine is incorrect.

Rodney

and I looked at various methods that could be used to get the data.

We finally settled o
n

using WMI in which the SMIBIOS is queried instead of the operating system, yielding an

accurate total.

Rodney then wrote C code that utilized WMI via COM.

-

Worked with Rodney to fix the Adobe Fireworks issue

Adobe Fireworks wanted to be able to write t
o a directory during install.

Setup script was

Modified to enter into C:
\
Temp during the install.

-

Helped Rodney on user home directory issue

User’s home directories for new users were not mapping correctly to U:.

(This issue is

related to ticket 2319.)

The issue ended up being that the Account Maintenance

script

was setting the user’s home drive as U, not U:.

I modified my original AD script

to set all user home directories to U:.

(A previous full run of Account Maintenance

had incorrectly set all
user home directories to U.)

-

Deployed isqft Viewer to mws816 (Smith 249) for end user testing

User sent an e
-
mail to Armando indicating the viewer did not work correctly.

However,

the isqft website has a correct installation confirmation page that indica
tes the

viewer is installed correctly.

Armando is checking with the user to get details.
