Chicago NetTuesday Inaugural Meeting

What do NPOs in Chicago need to be more effective, both individually &
collectively?

-
more open

dialogue,
a
conversation

with continuity

-
NPOs

need clear justifications for investing in new technologies, proof of their
benefits

(success stories), as well as a fuller understanding of the cost in time
&/or money it would take to commit to use of any new technology.

-
N
eed a way to frame our ongoing

conversations about technology to be
inclusive to NPOs who are in different stages of developing their web technology
,
s
o
that we can simul
t
an
eously be
growing the tech capacity of

everyone from the
NPO that still need to get a static IP address to the N
PO that has a good website
& wants to try new tools
. We need to identify tools in the right sequence to
benefit NPOs appropriately.

-
there is a need to more efficiently connect abundance and resources with local
hands

-
more efficient and useful data manag
ement technology
, both improved
common
-
use web based data & greater capacity building for strengthening
internal data recording tools & processes

-
pro
-
bono
or low
-
cost
tech networks

of developers and/or consultants

-
More partnerships with universities,
partnerships a
mongst NPOs, more open
networks. There is a need for NPOs to reduce old habits of protecting turf, or
exclusive networks, and more towards a
sense of common good

-
NPOs need a more keen understanding of the political landscape

-
better ways to

track

accountability
, progress of

NPOs

Throughout the conversation, a number of common obstacles to realizing
some of those goals popped up. They are….

-
Gap between aspirations and realities

-
digital divide, access, hardware

-
tech is often last on the p
riority list for NPOs, lack capacity/funds to dedicate to
technology development

-
NPOs don’t know that they don’t know (about technology developments that
could help them grow)…..getting NPOs to understand what’s
