Wireless Network Security

Wireless networks are easy to set up using the default settings, but if done this way, they are not
secure. If the network is not secure, someone nearby can get into your network and see the files
on your compute
rs (e.g. someone parked on the street)

possibly even see your password file
(where passwords to Internet websites are stored), or use your Internet connection.

Following is a list of the things you can do to secure your network. You can choose some or a
of these

what to do to get a new computer on the network, or to trouble
shoot problems.

1. Change the router's password from the default 'admin'. This is essenti

2. Change the name of the wireless network (SSID) from the default 'Linksys'. Also essential.

3. Turn off broadcasting of the wireless network name (SSID). This prevents the network from
appearing on people's computers. The down
side is that legiti
mate users need to know the name
of the network to connect. Highly recommended.

4. Use encryption on the network. Although it is possible for hackers to break the encryption
key, this is recommended. The down
side is that users need to know the encrypt
ion key the first
time they log into the network. 128
bit encryption or higher is recommended.

5. Allow only particular wireless computers to access the network by filtering on the MAC
address. A great way to control who gets on your network. The downs
ide is that every time you
add a new computer to the network, it needs to be specifically added to the list of allowed
computers on the router.

6. Change the IP address of your router and IP network. The Linksys default is It's
a good idea
to change it, but not essential. The network address is

again, this can
be changed.

7. If you do the above, you can make it more secure by turning off DHCP on the router, and
configuring the computers manually with the network information, r
ather than having them
configure themselves from the router. (DHCP is a protocol that configures your computers
autotmatically with network settings).

8. Limit the number of computers configured by DHCP to the same as the number of computers
that should
be on the network

proof, but this is one more barrier to hackers.

All of these things provide barriers to hackers

None are impenetrable, but at least you won't be
leaving the door wide open.
