HIDDEN ACTIVITY LOGGER WITH ROOTKIT

In today’s environment, there is a great emphasis on learning the higher level technologies,
whereas kernel/lower level stuff leaves a void to be filled.
This is the motivation behind
developing a project, where concepts such as rootkits and process activity interception and
logging (low level fiddling) come into play. The purpose is to acquire these skills, while
developing a product that is equally useful

in the Information Security Stream.

The term rootkit refers to ‘stealth’ i.e. hiding the existence of activity logger itself. Rootkits are a
taboo concept, most notoriously used in Trojans, viruses and other forms of malwares. Activity
logging is recordi
ng certain types of activities inside a system. Activity Monitoring is performed
by products such as Antiviruses and Firewalls.



Firewalls perform network activity monitoring.



Real
-
time protection mechanisms of AntiViruses and AntiSpywares perform file

system
monitoring.

The product uses client/server architecture to implement the stated functionality.

At the server side filter driver and rootkit work at the kernel l
evel. Rootkit enables necessary.
Components at the server side to remain hidden. The func
tion of the filter driver is to intercept
the filesystem I/O calls and registry I/O call made by the selected processes and logs them
down in separate files for each process. Similarly the LSP monitors the activity taking place on
the network (only activit
y of selected processes); this activity is reported to the LSP client, which
logs it down. The keylogger records the keystrokes made on the system. At the client side the
user/administrator sends request to the server side to fetch the data. The data is fe
tched in raw
format and is parsed at the client side

HMMPAYL AN ANOMALY BASED IDS

The project is based on the HMMPayl Algorihm. HMMPayl shall analyze
the HTTP payload at
byte level. The packets shall be captured from the network interface card (NIC) before moving
onto the application layer. From there on, the Hidden Markov Model (HMM) algorithm shall work
on the payload. Its working can be divided in th
ree phases:



Feature extraction



Pattern analysis



Classification

Random sequences shall be extracted to produce a statistical model which shall represent the
payload. Patterns shall be analyzed in the modeled sequences and each sequence shall be
assigned a probability. These probabilities shall be combined and fused in
multiple ways which
are explained in detail in section 2 and then the payload shall be passed after being classified
as a legitimate packet or dropped otherwise.

The IDS shall operate in two modes: the training mode and the detection mode. During training

mode the “normal behavior” shall be constructed. Deviation from the normal mode shall detect
malicious traffic during detection mode.

Anomaly detection approach allows addressing the
limitation of rule

based systems, thus providing for an effective soluti
on. Byte level analysis of
the payload allows for smooth working of the IDS without the knowledge of the web applications
running on the server.

The purpose of the product is to provide security for web servers. The
algorithm has been experimentally tested

to give good detection results for a fixed false positive
rate as compared with other anomaly based IDSs.

HTML OBFUSCATION

The project comprises of developing an HTML obfuscation application that can be used to
obfuscate elements in an HTML code. The application has an entire range of utilities; for
instance,
making the information theft difficult from online blogs, censoring only a part of a web
page depending on the company (or national) policy instead of blocking the entire page,
replacing any part of the page with user
-
defined text etc.

Hypertext Markup Lan
guage (HTML) is widely used to display content in a web browser. The
data in HTML requests is very easily accessible and can be extracted using automated tools.
This information is used in mass communication, advertisement; intellectual property theft etc.

Obfuscation is the hiding of intended meaning in communication by making communication
confusing, willfully ambiguous, and harder to interpret.

Our application runs on server where web sites are hosted. The server admin shall be able to
tweak/configure t
he application and the settings for obfuscation. The application shall listen to
all the incoming requests and shall return the response after obfuscating. Our application is
limited by the bandwidth and performance specifications of the server on which it

shall be
installed on.

Obfuscation shall be done via java script. This way the code shall be made difficult to be read
by the bots to steal the information/data.

Supply chain is an important area in any manufacturing or retail enterprise. The management of
the supply chains is difficult and can greatly affect the performance of an organization.

This project focuses on the development of Supply Chain Management Sys

integrate the upstream and downstream supply chains. The project will focus on a general
purpose, customizable solution that can cater for the needs of a variety of SMEs.

The proposed
project will focus on the development of a workflow

based s
ystem that will use the open
-
standards and technologies like Web services to integrate supply chains in a particular value
chain for a particular organization especially SMEs.


The system consists of a web
-
based system through which the administrator acces
ses the
system and can perform a variety of tasks. The customers and suppliers of the supply chain
access the functionality of this system transparently by using web services that call the
appropriate functions on our system.

The advantage of this techniqu
e is that the customers and
suppliers don’t need to visit our system and can place orders and view invoices from their
system and the request is automatically forwarded to our system and so their and our database
is updated with only one user request.

Some of the functions of the system, apart from those
mentioned, include report generation, user account management, invoice management, stock
forecasting, sales statistics and customer/supplier management.

The web based system is
implemented using JSP an
d client side technologies and will run a windows based system. The
web system stores its data on a MySQL database server.

There is also an android sub

through which a warehouse administrator can access the main database and update product
and order

data by scanning product barcodes and entering new information.

The android
system will use web services to communicate with the database since it is unable to do so on its
own and the result will be communicated to the android system in an understandable

format.

KINECT BASED VIRTUAL COMBAT TRAINING (KIVICT)

Kinect is a motion sensing input device designed by Microsoft for the Xbox 360 video

game
console and Windows PCs. It captures the gestures of the user and translates them into
computer readable data, which are then interpreted and the user can then interact with the
game on Xbox or PC without any physical contact. It provides a completely

hands free
environment for interaction with the system.

The device has an RGB camera, depth sensor and multi
-
array microphone, which provide full
-
body 3D motion capture. A single device (1xKinect sensor) can detect maximum two users from
frontal view.

In

a battlefield, soldiers must be aware of their surroundings. They must be
prepared physically and mentally and must be able to react to any situation which may occur.
This environment can be used to enhance the physical and mental capabilities of the sold
iers
through rigorous training. A virtual reality of a training facility will be designed and an
environment will be created similar to it, it will have certain terrain and objects in it to depict a
zone of combat. Training of the soldiers consists of assa
ult courses and live fire practice. With
the increasing strength of the army, and the increasing costs in the production of arms and
ammunition, live fire training is becoming very expensive. Carrying out the training and routine
live fire sessions is very

expensive.

This new system will provide as a good alternative, a training simulator which will help in
reducing the costs of live training, and also help soldiers in training according the particular
scenarios. It will help in building up the confidence
level of a soldier.

These things can be
learned through this product and costs of live weapon and ammunition use can be saved.

KiViCT shall make use of Kinect sensor to recognize the physical gestures (e.g. jumping,
crouching etc.) of the user. Aiming and
shooting shall be done by WiiRemote, which shall be
used to emulate mouse movements wirelessly.

CLOUD BASED DATA MANAGEMENT APPLICATION
FOR PEER TO
PEER NETWORKS (LAB CLOUD)

The desktops available in Labs are under

utilized especially the storage space. Its true potential
can be achieved if it is used as joint storage and computation device using a peer to peer
middleware. These resources
can be used for efficient file sharing system. The project
contributes towards this goal by designing and deploying a middleware based on peer to peer
file sharing system with an interactive web based front end for managing file and data storage.
The final

product enables the users to store their data over a remote machine and retrieve it
when it is required. This paradigm promises to minimize the need for maintaining expensive
data center facilities by companies and institutes. This will reduce the overall

cost of digital
storage space for the users/workers of an organization as the computers available in
Labs/Offices will provide storage with elasticity property.

The project demonstrates the implementation of cloud storage on a network of computers in

peer

to peer fashion. The middleware acts as a mediator between user and the storage
backend. A web based user
-
interface has been developed which assists the user in
accessing

his cloud based storage and ensure communication over the network in a secure
manner

using an authentication mechanism.

Good quality services, reusability of available resources and cheap cost of storage are the main
advantages that are achieved from this system.

Any web browser using

Windows or Linux
operating system can be used to acces
s the user data files as the system has been built in
“Ruby on Rails”. Minimum requirements include a Pentium III computer which is sufficient for
the deployment of this cloud middleware. While a Pentium 2 computer having an internet
explorer which support
s basic web technologies can be used to access this cloud infrastructure
from client side.

on NUST.
The purpose of application is to automate the manual Examination Process to provide efficient,
convenient, free of prejudice, flexible, secure and error free management of Examination
process. We have developed automated examination system with a main focus on objective
type questions (e.g. as in entrance exams) which can be marked by the system usi
ng
previously stored answers against each question and doesn’t require an external examiner
involvement.


Our System allows access to authorized users only with specific roles. Administrator

maintains
the system technically, generates log reports and creat
es user accounts.

PANORAMIC STREET
VIEW

Google has developed Street View through integration of images taken through Optical
Cameras, IR sensors and GPS information. All these sensors are placed on a vehicle, which
moves across the city, takes images and combine them into 360 panoramic stre
et views. This
technology is of great military importance as well. These types of views generated during peace
time may help law enforcement agencies to plan an operation in that area. This technology is
available only with Google and is not available to o
ur forces in a complete product form.

SECURE ELECTRONIC VOTING SYSTEM

Secure Electronic Voting System (SEVS) is a system for conducting the election through
internet from a mobile location in a secure
and transparent way keeping the anonymity of the
voter and integrity of the system. SEVS is having the scope of MCS society elections.

Our system includes two major parts: A client web application providing the facility to the voter
to vote from any locati
on and a Server side to handle the vote its security, integrity and
transparency as well as the management of the database.

The complete process consists of two phases. Phase one is registration of the voters which is
done by the system administrators on b
asis of data collected from the voters or departments.
Phase two is the casting of the vote which is a simple three step process i.e. identification
through user name and password (mailed to voter after registration). Then verification through
secret quest
ions and the one time password sent via email and mobile phone to make sure the
authentication of the voter. Then voter will choose his candidate from ballot and vote will be
casted after the confirmation. Now this vote will be encrypted with counter key
and sent to the
collector which remove the senders identification i.e. IP Headers and send it to counter which
checks the signature of the vote and add it to the counts after the voting is complete. The
validator, collector and the counter are configured o
n one server along with the Key Server.

SMART PHONE APPLICATION FOR VISUALIZATION OF HISTORICAL
PERSONALITIES NETWORKS

The purpose
of the project is to collect relevant information about the historical personalities
from different source pages with in Wikipedia and present it with an easy

to
-
use interface using
an android based smart phone. A graphical interface will present the conci
se information which
shall be optionally available in detail. This smart phone application shall visually present
information, linking historical personalities from a specific era in the form of a network. The
project’s scope is limited to show the network

of Mughal emperors from the geo graphical area
of Delhi (India), connected (orotherwise) in a limited era of 1500A.D to1750 A.D. This
application will show information about Mughal emperors (3
-

links deep) from different parts
of society and will connect
them based on their possible blood, social, professional
relationships. Results to a query will be displayed as nodes in a graphical network structure
(with details available on request) in textual form.

Major software to be used is android based Operating System (OS) version 3.0 (Honeycomb) or

information from Wikipedia. It requires information about SPARQL query language, which is
used to extract information from dbpedia. It also requires a library called “Jena” version 2.5
which provide
s a way of running SPARQL queries and processing results of those queries. SQLite
database isused to store extracted information. SQLite is an OpenSource Database which is
embedded into Android. It supports standard relational database features like SQL sy
ntax,
transactions and prepared statements. SQL queries have been used for database transactions.

Smart classroom facilitates interactive and collaborative learning among students. Real time
interactive session is provided for distance learning. This is a comprehensive solution designed
to enhance students’ academic performance with simple, practical a

Since the use of android phones has increased in the past few years and likewise the mobile
theft incidents have increased too. As it's portable and it's losable, so it's a good idea to think
ahead and plan for locating your android device if you misplace
it someday or it gets stolen.

Spydroid is an android based application capable of controlling, monitoring and

manipulating
mobile services from a remote device.

There are few good applications already present in the
market which provide one with different

functionalities. Our aim is to re

applications, combining the mobile tracking part of these applications and the remote handling

To meet up the requirement of a fast and efficient working system consistent with the rapid pace
of present date and age, army aspired to have such digitized workshops that could accomplish
more work in lesser time and that too in the most organized and we
ll assimilated manner.
“SRTW record automation project “ is one such project proposed by Signal Directorate GHQ
with a goal to “Develop an application for SRTWs which can help create a paper free and work
efficient environment in SRTW while automating all
the record previously handled manually and
prone to omissions , deletions and misinterpretations ”. The project chiefly aims at increasing
the overall efficiency of SRTWs. SRTW record automation is a degree project following Army’s
step towards creating a
paper free environment. It has applicability and relevance to Signal
Corps of Pakistan Army hence the intended audience are project team, project supervisor,
Signal units, Signal Headquarters and GHQ Signal Directorate.

Army is undergoing process of shift
ing from manual paper environment of maintaining records
to paper free environment. Signal repair and training workshops plays vital role in the
performance of signal corps as bulk of the equipment held at signal units is being repaired in
these workshops
which requires a lot of paper work for the record of equipment and consumes
a lot of time. In addition to that, the units that send the equipment from various locations are
normally unaware of the present status of the equipment they sent for repair. Produ
ct under
development is going to focuses on all these issues to provide efficient data handling and
maintenance at the same time providing dependent units facility to access the status of their
equipment via Office Automation System. Product will be centra
lly deployed so that it can be
extended in future for all SRTWs. Existing OAS infrastructure will be used for the provision of
services, separate pages will be given to SRTW and units. Only requirement is the access of
OAS to both units and SRTWs.

URL FILTERING IN BROADBAND ACCESS TECHNOLOGIES

With the rapid speed progress of internet and web throughout the world, some
problems have
also been noticed because of it. The most important among these are unwanted and infuriating
contents on the web for example religiously sensitive topics, Pornography, Political issues,
Abusive content and Terrorism invoking pictures and cont
ent. All of these are very sensitive
issues and needed to be taken care of. At the same time, blocking the complete website is not a
practical approach.

URL filtering is a mechanism to block access to certain types of websites and content filtering is
mech
anism to block specific content of a website. Our proposed system is to develop a system
for URL and content filtering in Broadband Access Technologies; a system to block specific
URLs and contents of a web site depending upon the policies defined.

URL Fib
at is proxy based filtering system which runs at proxy server. It monitors all the web
requests and http traffic, if a web request is in blacklist the URL will be blocked. Our system use
squid proxy to cache the URLs.


Our system is developed on UBUNTU 11.
10 and squid cache for caching the traffic and it will
compatible with any system with the LINUX 32bit OS and minimum 2 GB Ram. It will block the
traffic coming from any operating system and web browser.

PREVIEWING 3D DÉCOR CHANGES ON ANDROID OS

This is an android application that allows users to preview the placement of 3
-
D objects into a
real time scene. The android
device’s camera and display is used to provide a “window” into an
augmented reality, where these virtual objects are displayed as if they were actually in the
scene. We have illustrated the concept by placing virtual furniture in a room, although this coul
d
be extended to place any 3D object in any scene.

The work focuses on importing 3D objects on top of a specific image already present in
application as the marker; these 3D Objects can be downloaded respective to the marker
detected from online server. De
tection of multiple markers simultaneously and rendering
different 3D Models respective to detected markers is present. This application provides the
advertisers an Augmented Reality solution for previewing 3
-
D
décor changes such that giving
both users and

brands the ability to connect even further with a product before, during and after
making a purchase. We have designed the user friendly application with a simple interface. The
application is designed using the android SDK version 2.2. It further uses Vu
foria SDK to enable
Augmented Reality on android. When the application opens the camera view is opened. The
application gets camera frame and starts detecting the marker. For this purpose firstly pixel
format conversion is done followed by the Feature Poin
ts Computation and finally the marker
identification. The information of the marker is then sent to our online server where the
information of marker is matched against the information of the 3D object in the database. Once
the respective 3D object is foun
d on the server, it is downloaded in the android device and
shown in the real time scene else the error message is generated. This virtual environment for
the placement of 3D object is created by Unity (a 3D game engine) which is integrated with the
applic
ation.

We have successfully implemented the marker detection algorithm and placement of 3D object
in to a real time scene using Vuforia SDK and Unity game engine. As a result, the placement of
3D teapot, television and furniture is accomplished using this
application. By using this
application furniture can be simulated to the user before buying. The application is useful for
interior design, furniture marketing, and even historical
-
site education.

The project is to design a system that can identify the wireless standard of the transmitter (e.g.
GSM,
WIMAX
) along with its direction of arrival.

he direction of arrival (azimuthal location) wi

graphically on visual monitor.

n this project, the wireless user will be identified and located with the help of
four modules.

he modules include ultra wide band antenna array, band pass filters, down converters and
DSP

module.

he received analog signal will be passed through

converter to make it suitable for digital
processor.

he signal processing techniques will be employed to find the location of the received signal.
