Korean consumers and businesses from substandard or illegal IT products from foreign

Network Policy

& Wireless Broadband Policy


'The Giga Internet pilot project' (implemented by the National Information Society Agency :
NIA), which aims to bring gigabit Internet connection to households by 2013, successfully
completed its first year of service in 2009, with 4 pilot services(Giga we
bzone, 3D IPTV
based tele
-
learning, 3D VOD, Personal Media Server) provided by 2 consortiums(CJ
Hellovision, KT) to 4 'Giga Towns' (apartment complexes) in 4 cities(Seoul, Busan, Suwon,
Gwangju). In 2010, in addition to existing 4 pilot services, 4 new pil
ot
services(3D+multiangle IPTV, nScreen service
-
providing multiple contents to multiple
devices, KT Home
-
remotely accessing content stored in devices at home, Smart Viewer
-
utilizing HD quality CCTV installed at home for variety of applications including se
curity)
will be provided by 2 consortiums(same as 2009) to total of 6 'Giga Towns' (2 more than in
2009) in 5 cities (1 more than in 2009 with city of Daejeon added).



'Wireless Broadband Network Strategy'. With proliferation of wireless devices such as
smartphones and increase in users' demand for wireless data, the KCC(with support from
NIA), is currently developing a national wireless broadband network strategy, incorporating
Wifi, WiBro, cellular network, to provide convenient and secure wireless Inte
rnet
environment to users and promote wireless Internet industry through new business model
development.
