Data Kiva

Introduction

Educational Data Mining (called EDM) is an emerging discipline, concerned with developing methods for exploring the unique ty
pes
of data that come from educational settings, and using those methods to better understand students, and the
settings which they

learn in.

A key area of EDM is mining comput
er logs of student performance.

Another key ar
ea is mining enrollment data.

Key uses
of EDM
. As an introduction to this Kiva, let’s go around the room and have each person respond to this question. How eff
ective of
a “miner” are you? What are your strengths and weaknesses?

How do you deal with the teacher who doesn’t want/see the need to use data? What types of ways are you increasing the
data flow to y
our teachers/parents/students? Are we too complicated with the way we present our data to
teachers/parents/students?

In the end, we can collect all the data we want, if it isn’t used by teachaers, it is of little value ex

Quality of Data questions

1.

The state report card
tells use one part of the data (and perhaps the most important part as it’s the public version of how
we did). In many w
ays this data comes through your building, through EMIS, and ultimately appears on the report card.
Accuracy (in particular soon to be real time accuracy) is critical. How prepared are your clerical staff and teaching staff
in
terms of training and abili
ty to ensure high quality data?

2.

How accurate is the PublicSchoolworks discipline data? How useful is this site?

Predictive data

How “predictive is it really?”

The questions surrounding Value Added scores are many. First, lets discuss what Value Added
data is?

2.

How is the Value Added data critical to your building and/or teaching staff? To the district?

3.

How are you anticipating the change in calculation effecting your local report card

4.

How valuable (grades 5
-
8 only) are the Value Added Golf scores?
Where do those come from?
