RACE+ database application


T
he E
-
RACE+ database application is a dynamic and centrally administered
application. It is a direct tool used by users (mangers of the enterprises and/or
users who work with enterprises) in the process of benchmarking analysis of an
enterprise in accordan
ce with the E
-
RACE+ work methodology (if you would
like to know more about the E
-
RACE+ methodology, please go to
E
-
RACE+
Model
). The application allows for creating an unlimited number of domestic
and foreign modules and choosing the working language by th
e users. The
application stores coded data of enterprises collected from the E
-
RACE+
questionnaire and generates comparative reports for different peer groups. The
database is accessible by authorised users only.

In terms of its construction, the applicat
ion has been based on generally
available components: the server of the application works under Linus
operating system, the database is serviced by PostgreSQL server. The
application with the database is exploited
via a

browser

which fa
cilitates a remote and convenient access to its functions.

In the process of creating the application, priority was given to its user
-
friendliness. For the sake of simplicity, the application has been built of several




standard components. Their mode of use is identical in all the modules.
Users
can quickly learn to communicate with the application and use it on a daily
basis as all operations are performed by using the same standard elements
which quickly fall into place.

can access only the data of “their” enterprises (the enterprises they are
responsible for).

The application can be used by authorised users only. Each user has his/her
own, unique ID and a password for verification of authoris
ation. The user ID and
his password are given by the National
Centre

The password should be well protected and not disclosed to any third parties.

It
is the protection of the data stored in the application against any third parties.

he principles of working with the E
-
RACE+ application


The E
-
RACE+ application can be accessed from
standard Internet browsers
.
Basically, it can work with all brow
sers offering JavaScript and CSSL. There are
no special requirements as regards PCs to access the system apart from a
graphic card and a colour monitor with a 1024x769 resolution. A minimum
resolution of a monitor is 88x6000. To view reports, a plug
-
in Acr
obat Reader
(Adobe) should be installed, as all reports are generated in PDF format.

Before starting, check settings in your Internet browser and change them, if
necessary. The browser:



should be set to accept cookies,



should have the option indicated the

mode of using the cookies’ buffer to
the value “upon each visit to the site”,



should have the preferred country code to the code of the country, the
language of which the user wishes to use when working with the
application.

Exploitation of the E
-
RACE+ a
pplication in many languages is possible i.e. the
whole communication with the user (communicates, screens, suggestions, etc.)
may be kept in the language chosen by the operator and may be chosen at
any time by changing the option of preferred country. The

architecture of the
application allows for storing its data (the content of the base) by using
different standards for coding national symbols.





The screen of the application

The application works in one screen of the Internet browser divided into
perman
ent areas. In the upper part of the window, the logo of the system is
always displayed. The left side of the screen displays a contract menu. The
largest, middle area is the working area. In the working area controls are
displayed. Via these controls, the
user may affect the operation of the system.
The working area is also used for presentation of results. The principle followed
when working with the application is that the user works

in one window of the
browser.

The
standard
form of the
E
-
RACE+
application





The form is used to insert, modify or view the data collected by the application,
or to specify additional parameters for particular operations. The form consists
of fields where the data can be entered, an
d the prompts informing what data
should be entered in particular fields. It is usually accompanied by two buttons
which enable the user to save the entered data (
Add

or
Save
) or cancel the
entered data (
Cancel
). At any moment the user may start another op
eration
by selecting it from the menu, but it is tantamount to quitting of the current
operation. All the information entered in the form will be lost then.

The following types of information may be displayed in t

It is a rectangular area, where the user can enter/modify the data.

The field which can only be filled in via selecting one particular value from the

User’s menu contains three basic functions:

function: entering data of an enterprise from the
interview under the first and subsequent compar
ative analyses and/or print
reports

step description of the process of a user’s work with
the E
-
RACE database application.


STEP 1. Logging to the application


A user

RACE+ web site

available on

application is
accessible
only for
authorised users.

As soon as the log

in screen is open, the user must log in by entering user name
and a password, and than click the window

After successful login, the application shows the start menu, contains three
basic functions:

for editing the enterprises’ data stored in the
database application, working with the application (implementation of
question’s scores) and generating and printing benchmarking report

STEP 2. Creating of an enterprise in the database


This operation performs via
Manage Enterprises

function displayed in the form
List of Companies
. It displays all filtered enterprises i.e. a list of ent
erprises
‘allocated’ to the users logged onto the application.
If the user
is a manager of
the enterprise who make a benchmarking test for its own company, in the form
of List of Companies appears only one enterprises. In case of
other users like
consulta
nts, experts who work for not only one companies, the form of List of
Companies displays “their” enterprises (the enterprises they are responsible for).

The risk of a mistake in

this operation is low. Some fields of this form, like Code
Name of the enterprise or Business Centre, are filled in automatically by the
application system.

equired to submit changes. The application will inform about
any validation errors if not all required fields will be fill in. The message with
validation error is usually displayed in the top of the working area in red color of
letters.

STEP 3. Testing of the enterprise

The next step after creation of an enterprise in the database is a testing of the
enterprise


entering comparative scores from the interview questionnaire. To

enterprise, including: number of tests running within enterprise, Date and year
when each test was run, and information if test have been completed, or not.

STEP 4. Validation of testing

The last step in the evaluation process is the approval of the questionnaire. It is
possible only if all the obligatory (required) fields are filled out. It means that all
the validation criteria are met.

RACE+ report file in Adobe Acrobat PDF format.
Before proceeding with the report generation check if your computer has
Acrobat reader installed, otherwise you can download it from Adobe website.
The
report can be printed or stored as an electronic file on a PC outside the
application.


The report generation is the last stage in working with the application. Once the
report is generated, you can go back to the form containing the basic data of
the anal
yzed enterprise.
