HP 3861 ServerNet adapter
By providing a link between HP NonStop
servers and Ethernet LANs, the HP 3861
ServerNet adapter delivers access to
low-cost Ethernet networking solutions,
including those using switched Ethernet,
ISDN-to-Ethernet, and frame-relay-to-
Ethernet technologies.

Features at a glance
•Versatile, four-port Ethernet ServerNet adapter
•Open interface to ServerNet WAN communications
•Support of open, industry-standard protocols
through SLSA
•Compatible with TLAM port clients
•Support for DSM products
The HP 3861 ServerNet adapter provides flexible
and efficient connectivity between HP NonStop servers
and Ethernet local area networks (LANs). It features
four ports per I/O board, with each port supporting
communications speeds of 10 megabits per second.
The 3861 ServerNet adapter also provides connectivity
to wide area networks (WANs). Working with the
ServerNet Wide Area Network (SWAN) concentrator,
the 3861 ServerNet adapter supports SDLC, X.25,
bisynchronous, asynchronous, and HP Expand (HDLC)
communications, linking HP NonStop servers to standard
WAN environments over an Ethernet LAN.
Versatile, four-port Ethernet
ServerNet adapter
The 3861 ServerNet adapter lets NonStop servers
communicate with Ethernet and IEEE 802.3 LANs and
the devices attached to them. It offers increased flexibility
for local-area and wide-area communications, enhanced
communications processing power, throughput capability,
and minimized processor latency.
The 3861 ServerNet adapter features four 10-megabit-
per-second Ethernet ports on a single board that occupies
only one ServerNet adapter slot on NonStop servers.
Two sets of dual 68060 and 68360 chips control the four
Ethernet ports, a design that lets you designate one set of
ports as a backup to the other for maximum system and
application availability (see figure 1).

The 3861 ServerNet adapter offers increased
flexibility for local-area and wide-area
communications, enhanced communications

and minimized processor latency.
Open interface to ServerNet
WAN communications
The 3861 ServerNet adapter works with the SWAN
concentrator to link NonStop servers to WANs via an
Ethernet LAN. Together, the 3861 ServerNet adapter
and the SWAN concentrator support such WAN
protocols as SDLC, X.25, bisynchronous, asynchronous,
and the Expand (HDLC) WAN protocol.
The SWAN concentrator converts inbound data from
WAN protocols to TCP/IP before transferring it to
the 3861 ServerNet adapter and ServerNet internal
drivers. It likewise converts outbound TCP/IP data to
the appropriate WAN protocols before forwarding
it to the WAN.
The 3861 ServerNet adapter provides a reliable
Ethernet connection between NonStop servers and
the SWAN concentrator. With its dual pairs of Ethernet
ports, it lets the system automatically switch to an
alternate communications path if the primary path fails.
Support of open,
industry-standard protocols
The adapter supports open communications protocols
through the ServerNet LAN Systems Access (SLSA)
software product, a standard component of the HP
NonStop Kernel operating system on NonStop servers.
SLSA enables NonStop servers to connect to LANs
supporting the IEEE 802.2 Logical Link Control (LLC)
standard interface. Together, the 3861 ServerNet
adapter and SLSA software let you conduct multiple
communications operations simultaneously, using any
combination of available protocols, including TCP/IP,
IPX/SPX, and Expand/IP protocol (see figure 2).
Compatible with TLAM port clients
Through the services of SLSA, the 3861 ServerNet
adapter is fully compatible with clients of the TLAM port
interface. SLSA includes a programmatic interface called
the Port Access Method (PAM) that lets TLAM port clients
access LANs through the 3861 ServerNet adapter. The
PAM supports LLC1 and Ethernet custom applications.
Support for DSM products
The 3861 ServerNet adapter supports the HP Distributed
Systems Management (DSM) products. This enables
DSM products to manage the system requirements for
SLSA. The 3861 ServerNet adapter also supports
SNMP products in TCP/IP environments for greater
administrative control of heterogeneous networks.
Service and support
The 3861 ServerNet adapter includes a one-year
warranty and is available with a full range of service
and support options. In addition, HP Services personnel
are available to help install the 3861 ServerNet adapter.
HP Services can be particularly helpful in complex
client/server environments.
