Founded in 1912, Tulane University’s School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (SPHTM)
is
the oldest school of public health in the country and the only American school of tropical
medicine.
The

mission

of SPHTM

is to advance public health knowledge, promote health and
well
-
being, and prevent disease, disability, and premature mortality. Thi
s is accomplished
through academic excellence in the education of public health professionals, rigorous scientific
research of public health problems, creative partnerships to advance the practice of public
health, and innovative service to the local, nati
onal, and international public health community.

SPHTM is located near the commercial center
of New Orleans in the 24
-
story Tidewater
building
,

which was donated to Tulane by the Tidewater Corporation. SPHTM facilities comprise
approximately 125,000 square feet of floor space in the Tidewater building, a
nd include the
Health Sciences Center and SPHTM administrations, large classrooms, small conference seminar
rooms,
video conferencing capabilities,
computer and research laboratories, and classrooms
equipped for distance education and wireless computer on
-
line access. In addition to faculty
and administrative offices, the building contain
s

computer centers, student study areas,
student lounges,
cafeteria, banking facilities,
a student center and offices for the student
government association.

The Tidewate
r Building, part of the Tulane Medical Complex, is situated next to the Tulane
School of Medicine, Tulane University Hospital and clinics.
Being in

a central location in
downtown New Orleans,
it

is an ideal area for visiting scientists and scholars to spen
d their stay
as hotels
are

in walking distance to the complex.

Additionally, the SPHTM also has laboratories and faculty offices housed in the nearby J.
Bennett
Johnston

(JBJ) building. The building also contains seminar rooms, animal facilities, BSL

The School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine is accredited by the Council on Education for
Public Health.
