Brief Lesson Description

This project is a final, summary exercise based on the
concepts and tools learned throughout this course.
Students will play the role of an outside installation
and support technician from an Internet Service
Provider (ISP).

Standards/benchmark addressed by the Texas Higher
Education Coordinating Board (college level class)

Course Outcomes as defined by THECB:

Configure, manage, and troubleshoot routers and
subnets utilizing the TCP/IP protocol and routing
protocols such as RIP, IGRP, and EIGRP; backup and
restore router configurations; upgrade router
operating systems; configure routers to manage
subnets; create and apply access control lists.

Assessment Method

Students will be assessed on the accuracy of the
topology diagram as it relates to the customers’ needs.

The IP addressing plan will be reviewed by the
instructor for accuracy and growth needs.

Device configurations and network connectivity will
be verified by the instructor.

Planning Questions

Students will learn to apply the concepts learned
throughout this course through this capstone project. This
involves the student playing the role of an onsite
installation and support technician from an ISP.

Strategies that will provide evidence of student learning
include developing a flow chart and a topology diagram on
the customer’s existing network configuration and
implementing a new configuration to improve network
performance. This will require communication with the
customer regarding timelines, information on existing
equipment, and needs of the customer.

Planning Questions (continued)

Strategies that will help students acquire and integrate
learning include cues and questions between the
technician and customer regarding what is expected
from the technician and the customer, expected
equipment needs, cost analysis, and timeline involved.
This project will also involve summarizing and note
taking so the process is well documented for future

Strategies that will help students practice, review and
apply learning include practice and generating and
testing the hypothesis (making sure it works!)

Instructional Strategies

Reinforcing effort through classroom time by taking notes,
paying attention to concepts explained by the instructor,
participating in lab activities with other students, completing
homework assignments timely and thoroughly, studying for the
chapter assessments, and researching difficult concepts.

Practicing the concepts learned in class through the lab activities
will reinforce the concepts and allow the student to apply these
concepts in a hands
on environment.

Generating and testing the hypothesis occurs at the end of the
project. Is there a connection between the networks where
communication takes place? If so, then testing the hypothesis is
successful. If not, the student must troubleshoot the process to
see where mistakes were made and retest the hypothesis.

actually setting up a computer network.

particular concepts that may not have been addressed
in class.

My thoughts on this class:

I loved the book we used. It was very easy to read and
had great ideas. Even though I teach at a different
level than K
12, it still provided ideas that I can
incorporate into my classroom.

The lesson plans were definitely a challenge for me
since I do not have to do lesson plans. It made me
realize how important lesson plans are though.

Overall, I learned a lot through the reading and
research that we had to do.
