Definition of Terms

Physiographic province
-

area or boundary determined by similar landforms.

Faulting
-

A fracture in the continuity of a rock
formation caused by a shifting or
dislodging of the earth's crust, in which adjacent surfaces are displaced relative to one
another and parallel to the plane of fracture
.

Folding

bending or curving one or a stack of originally flat and planar surfaces (s
uch as
sedimentary strata).

Volcanism

volcanic force or activity.

Metamorphism
-

The process by which rocks are altered in composition, texture, or
internal structure by extreme heat, pressure, and the introduction of new chemical
substances.

Weathering
-

the decomposition of Earth's rocks, soils and minerals through direct
contact with the planet's atmosphere.

Erosion
-

a gravity driven process that moves solids in the natural environment or their
source and deposits them elsewhere.

Deposition
-

the

geological

process by which material is added to a

landform

or land
mass.

Sedimentation
-

t
he act or
process of depositing sediment.

Subduction
-

A geologic process in which one edge of one crustal plate is forced below
the edge of another.

Rifting

faulting that is mainly lateral.

Sea Floor Spreading
-

In the theory of plate tectonics, the process by w
hich new oceanic
crust is formed by the convective upwelling of magma at mid
-
ocean ridges, resulting in
the continuous lateral displacement of existing oceanic crust.

Convective
-

the mass movement of parts of a fluid within the fluid because of
differences in the density of different parts
.

Upwelling

an upward flow.
