The sale

by
fish breeders

is
currently
preceded

manual counting and
grading activities, which are exhaustive, time consuming, and
inaccurate
. Un
certain amount of
sold eggs or
juveniles

during the trade makes the trade unfair, especially for the buyers, since
he/she doesn’t have time to recount the eggs or
juveniles
. There is no
practical
counting device
available at farmer level currently
. This research aimed at developing an image proc
essing
method for counting and determining sizes of fish eggs and fish juveniles. Fish eggs or fish
juveniles are placed in a

specially designed
tray with a thin layer of water. The image is taken
from upper view

in such a way that
the image of the tray fi
ts
the
photo

frame. Th
resholding step
is then
applied
to

eliminate noises coming from shade and light glare

with a certain
. The
re
maining object image is recognized as a number of fish
schools
, whereas each
school

consists
of several eggs or juveniles depe
nding on the
size of the image. Each counting is preceded by a
calibration step where a number of eggs or
juveniles

is captured to know the average image size
of a fish or an egg. The accuracy depends much on
the lighting condition of the object. Different
lighting condition requires a different optimum value of thresholding parameters, so that it is
difficult to set a constant value of the parameters. The accuracy of egg counting is much better
than that of j
uvenile since their size, color, and position are relatively consistent.
