Contact angle:measuring
release by surface tension
The contact angle measures any difference between the
surface tension of a substrate and the surface tension of a
drop of water. Here the substrate is stainless steel, and
the contact angle is only 72 degrees.Notice the flattened
shape of the drop as it “wets out” on the steel surface.
On the left is the best of the competitive coatings tested. The water
“beads up” off the nonstick surface because of the great difference in
surface tensions. On the right is Eterna
TM
,which beads up even more
due to increased surface tension, which means additional release.
