Biomass energy register for sustainable site
development for European Regions
The utilisation of biomass as a renewable energy source which is locally available and storable offers an opportunity to local authorities to actively arrange energy
planning for their region.The core objective of the BEn project (November 2008 to October 2011) is the development of a regional energy register indicating
regional energy sinks as well as biomass potential for power and heat production.The collected data will be transferred and integrated into a web­based
geoinformation system.Based on the register local stakeholders boards in four model regions will develop regional master plans for sustainable utilisation of biomass.

GIS and sustainable utilisation of biomass
Projects in the field of bioenergy are characterized by a decentralized approach.Biomass is allocated over vast
areas and transportability is limited by a rather low energy density of the biomass so that a utilization of biomass
has to take place close to the origin of biomass.The energy contained within the biomass is converted to heat,
power or gas.In order to transport these energy forms to demanding structures,access to energy logistics and
infrastructure is necessary.These questions regarding biomass allocation or grid access have a spatial component
in common; hence geoinformationsystems are helpful means for planning purposes in this context.
Different geospatial questions characterize the utilization of biomass for energy purposes.The complete value
chain,starting at the origin of biomass,the transport of fuel to the location of energy conversion including energy
transfer can be modelled using geoinformation technologies.

The biomass energy register
With help of the above mentioned framework the layout and the functionality of the application are
developed.Furthermore it supports data integration into the application.External and project specific
WMS will be brought together in the application and displayed as a layered structure.For realizing a
distributed architecture the geodatabases and the mapserver are installed and maintained in the
regions,the data are published and integrated into one common application.

The graphical user interface (GUI)
which brings together the entire
content of the BEn register and
represents the interface towards the
user has been chosen to be developed
using the MapFish Framework.
MapFish is an open source framework
for producing online mapping
applications.The main component of
the MapFish client consists of
OpenLayers and the ExtJS framework.
OpenLayers is a popular open source
JavaScript library for displaying
dynamic map data in a web page.The
ExtJS framework is another JavaScript
framework.ExtJS is a user interface
framework that includes a number of
widgets and controls components to
produce sophisticated web interfaces.
Within the BEn project a classical three tier architecture is designed:A geodatabase as a backend,saving
and managing the data,a mapserver on the middle tier,generating the WMS and a graphical user interface,
representing the data to the final user.
