2. OBJECTIVES
Learning outcomes: understanding the role of metal ions in the living systems, introduction
into simple macromolecule metal complexes which can simulate processes of natural
bioactive substances
Competences: solving of practical problems (projects), interpretation of experimental results
in connection with literature data (theory)
3. SYLLABUS
Introduction, Oxidation stress induced by metal ions, Radical species’,
Antioxidant/prooxidant, Binding metal ions to the antioxidants, Efficiency of antioxidants’,
Fenton rection, Biological nitrogen fixation, Composition and structure of protein components
of nitogenases, Functioning of nitrogenases, Fe-Mo cofactors, Binding metals to biopolymers
(properties, application), Chemical models of photosynthesis, Assimilation of carbon dioxide,
Metalocenter assembly, Electron transfer in supramolecules, Role of metal ions at aggregation
of proteins (e.g. metalothioenins, prions, …), Simulation of protein aggregation using
molecular dynamic technique (examples), Biomineralisation processes, Biosensors for metal
ions.
