CA: Brooks/Cole, 2012

Course Description:
The study of the inheritance of human traits is addressed in this course. It is a non
-
mathematical study for the non
-
science major. The course includes Mendelian, non
-
Mendelian, sex
-
linked blood type traits, inherited disease and ethics.
Also included i
s a discussion related to

the
application of genomic approaches to improve understanding of human disease, drug discovery and
variable drug reaction.

Course Objectives
:
By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

1.

Discuss basic concepts of

human genetic, cells and human development
(PSLO:1)

2.

Discuss Mendelian laws of genetics to human characteristics
(PSLO:1)

3.

Understand the role of DNA structure, replication and mutation in human inheritance
(PSLO:1)

4.

Demonstrate an understanding of the role
of genetics in human population and environmental
issues
(PSLO:1,4)

5.

Define how DNA technology applies to the human experience.
(PSLO:1)

6.

Discuss the application of genomic approaches relative to human disease, drug discover, and
variability in reaction to m
edications.
(PSLO:1,4)

7.

Demonstrate the ability to construct a three generation pedigree using standardized symbols and
terminology.
(PSLO:1,2)

8.

Discuss the impact of social trends such as genetics and genomics on health care policies.
(PSLO:1,4,5)

9.

Explore implications of genetic and genomic testing in prenatal diagnosis, carrier testing, disease
profiling, and genetic susceptibility.
(PSLO:1,4,5)
