Destination Reading Sight Words

Sight
words a
re common words that are u
sed to hold thoughts together.
These high
frequency words cannot usually be sounded out because they do not follow
decoding rules.
From 50 to
75 percent of all words in the text material are sight words, so these are words
that m
ust be recognized at a glance
before a child can read with

confidence.

Destination

Reading te
aches 98 words as sight words.
These words have been measured
against a frequently used classroom tool

the

Dolch list.

Dolch List

Edward Dolch of the Universi
ty

of Illinois originally compiled the
“Dolch Basic Sight Word
List”.
The original

Dolch Word list contains 220 of the most frequently used word
s that make
up from 65 to
70

percent

of t
he words found in readers from K
-
3.

Many teachers have adopted the Dol
ch list as one
way of estimating their student
s

reading
level.
The number of words a
student

recognizes is the basis for assigning his/her equivalent
reading level.
