General description of scenario

This scenario is based on real, ongoing activities in the field of collec
ting audiovisual (video)
data documenting the intangible cultural heritage of rural communities and the ethically
sound exploitation of these data in research, education and even commercially oriented
project
.

Valérie is a
doctoral researcher on intangib
le cultural heritage of the Quechua speakers. For
her research work, she is doing her field research in the rural communities of the Andes in
Peru. There, she collects audiovisual (mainly filmic) field data in the fields of
living

and
performing arts
,
ritu
als
,
spoken language
,
music
, etc. (following the UNESCO definition,
these types of data constitute the
intangible cultural heritage

of a community, of a social
group):

1.

This material constitutes a basis for the scientific work of
Valérie

on the intangibl
e
cultural heritage.

2.

It serves also for a variety of practical local and global exploitations: the conservation
and transmission of the cultural traditions of the Andean communities through the
creation of a cultural community centre in Cuzco, Peru; targe
ted pedagogical uses in
community training (sensitizing young members of the community; teaching of
traditional knowledge and how to do strategies, …); the worldwide diffusion and
val潲isati潮 潦 the c潭munities

heritage 批 the means 潦 inf潲mati潮 techno
l潧y an搠
s潣ial me摩as.

It is also

intended to constitute a
part
ially open archive material

for the international
community of researchers in cultural and social sciences, for people engaged

in
linguistic and cultural mediation, the defence of cultural diversity and intercultural
dialogue

who are
using

for their activities

the

domain ontology :
"
Quechua Intangible
Cultural Heritage Ontology
"
(QCHO)

and the audiovisual
web channel
"
Quechua
Intangible Cultural Heritage Archives"
(QCHA)
.

But, for these and other exploitations,
very specific ethical conditions

have to be respected
and the

question of rights has to be rethought from the indigenous collective point of view.
Within this framework, it is necessary to obtain the explicit approbation of the author and the
indigenous people to use this material and to respect indigenous people

s
right to revoke or
limit the use of their images. For example, specific parts of the filmic material could not be
allowed to be reused in any context or to be accessible publicly (only community members
could have the right to access the whole material). M
oreover, the ethical issue of restitution
should be reached, through giving back raw material or edited data to the communities.

Finally, t
his scenario would like to demonstrate that the VDI technology could constitute a
breakthrough for people working in

the field of preservation and valorisation of intangible
cultural heritage. It can be demonstrated through this scenario that the VDI technology
contributes:

1.

to the
respect

of

human

rights
,
i.e.

in this concrete case, of

the rights of

communities

and
cust
odians

of

cultural
heritage

to

take part in and to
decide on projects including their
heritage;

2.

to the

promotion

of cultural diversity
,
facilitating the

circulation

of

knowledge

about

world
cultures
,
while

agreeing

with two

basic
expectations

of the people

concerned
:
a) the

diffusion

of their

cultural
assets

and

b) the
access to this

heritage

for their younger
generations.

3.

a

tool

of last generation

service

of

called

'traditional
'
,
demonstrating

that technological advances can

be

t
ools

for

enhancing the

traditional world
views and ways of life

if

they

are

well

adapted

and

thought

from

the

perspective

of

multiple

users (
including the
participation of indigenous communities
),
if they take into account

the

videos or
sequence
s of it ...).

4.

She verifies if the conditions of diffusion of films on her personal audiovisual channel
are respected (not all filmic material has to be diffused freely on her channel,
some
are intended only for specific categories of
users (i.e. for people of the Quechua
communities, for her scientific director in Paris, for research and teaching colleagues
in Paris …).

She verifies also if her filmic material is accessible on those portals for which she has
given her explicit acceptat
ion of diffusion (i.e.
Intercultural Dialog Archives (IDA)

channel, owned by Elisabeth)

and if the specific rights of diffusion are respected
(public diffusion only of those
videos

Valérie, a doctoral researcher on intangible cultural heritage of Quechua speaking
communities in Peru and Bolivia

General description of use case

Valérie intention is to process her filmic material through a systematic co
ntent analysis.
For
realizing these goals, the
VDI Video Creator

is provided with a small set of
pre
-
defined
content description scenarios

(
"
Quechua Intangible Cultural
Heritage
Ontology
"
(QCHO)
)
,
stored in CDS Server
) by the means of which Valérie can:

-

select interesting sequences

in

her
videos
,

-

analyze selected sequences

(i.e. classify, describe, index, translate)

Valérie:

1.

Identifies, in her audiovisual corpus, those sequences t
hat fit explicitly with the one or
the other of the
main topics defined in the
QCHO

ontology

(living and performing
arts,
rituals

…)
.

Each localized
sequence

is “virtually” extracted (i.e. “

The content of each
sequence

is, after on, submitted to a systematic analysis by the
means of the small set of
pre
-
defined content descript
ion scenarios

(based on the
QCHO

domain ontology
)
:

-

each

sequence

is identified with respect to the theme or subject it develops,

-

to the spatial and temporal
localization

of the subject,

-

etc.

4.

Valérie

also proceeds to a
visual

and
acoustic analysis

of a pre

selected corpus of
video
sequences
.

5.

Of some of the selected s
equences of her video corpus, Valérie produces also, via the
VDI Video Creator
, textual explanations in Spanish and French

(the original videos
are in general produced in Quechua).

6.

Va
lérie uploads/updates regularly her analyses in
the
form

of

VDIs, and publishes
these VDIs using the VDI Management Tool.

4.

Add references of the resulting
terms

in the web section

5.

Publishes the VDI representing the web section

6.

The web section is published on her web channel
. When selecting a term, the
VDI
Video Channel

returns the list of corresponding videos
and video sequences (using
VDI Search Engine

features)

7.

Repeat these steps for producing personalized sections such as
“Thesaurus of
Quechua

General description of use case

Elisabeth uses for each lec
ture the video material of
the
Intercultural Dialog Archives (IDA)
channel
which she manages on behalf of the FMSH, owner of this channel.
The use of videos
in her course helps Elisabeth to

better

introduce

her students
to

specific co
mmunication
problems in
concrete
intercultural situations.

The sequences of her 4h lecture always follow these steps :

-

She explains the objective of the course

-

She gives
the main

definition
s

and concepts of the today
’s lecture

-

She gives the instruction
to each student to watch, from their computer, on the
IDA

channel, the same video (20 minutes) that exemplifies theses concepts

-

Then she develops more deeply the concepts

-

She gives a questionnaire to the students: they
have to analyze, during 1h30, some
sequences of the video. This is a very pedagogical way to make them learn complex
concepts by experiencing concrete situations.

-

Then everybody debate on answers, watching again sometimes some sequences, and
Elisabeth te
lls them the good answers.

In consequence, during more than 2 hours, 15 computers stress the streaming server by
requesting for the same video.
Sometimes, students have to wait f
or 2
-
3 minutes before the
video is launched.

1.

Before, videos were streamed from Internet, using the FMSH media server.

2.

Today, they are streamed from CONET network, whose caching features improve the
navigation through videos for the students. More, the wait
ing time of 2
-
3 minutes
experienced before by students is reduced to 30 seconds.

3.

These improvements have been measured by a tool installed on computers at the
university.

The university experience a network node failure.

1.

Before, videos were not available
anymore: Elisabeth always brings the file on an
external disk, in case of network failure...

2.

Today, videos are still available, using the replication features of the CONET
network.

3.

This has been tested by network failures simulations.
