R
efres
hed Kia Soul
enjoys a
restyling

C
ompletely
refreshed
, the latest

version of
Kia
’s popular
Soul
B
-
segment MPV
has been
given a
restyling
to enhance its unique appeal to European consumers. New Soul
offer
s

consumers
a more refined appearance,
new powertrains, a
higher specification
, a more
premium feel
to the cabin
and even
greater
potential
for
personalis
ation
.

“Soul has played a key role in establishing
Kia as a
design
-
led brand
, and
even
two years
after
its launch
it
remains
a bold challenger
vehicle that really stands out from the
conventional B
-
segment crowd,“
comments Paul Philpott, COO Kia Motors Europe.

Kia has sold more than 46,000 Soul
s

in Europe since its launch in early 2009 and we
expect the
h
igher specification of the
refreshed model to
help grow sales further while
maintain
ing

the original model’s

unique appeal,” adds Philpott.

Styling improvements for the new model
give Soul a wider, more stable appearance and
more refined proportions
. The

nose is
extended by 15 mm

to accommodate the upgraded
powertrains,
tak
ing
overall length to 4,120 mm. The
lower
front air intake is wider
,

and
the
round

front
fog lamps are
larger
.

As standard, new more powerful twin
-
bulb headlamps with black bezels and

twin
-
bulb
day
time

running lights (DRL) are fitted for improved illumination. New projection headlamps
and LED light clusters, front and rear, are available as options.

New style 16
-

and 18
-
inch alloy wheels and ‘pull’ door handles enhance the Soul’s pro
file,
while redesigned exterior mirrors feature integrated LED side repeaters.
At the rear, the
black
bumper inset panel is extended, moving the
twin
fog lamps out towards the extremit
ies

of the car.

Refreshed Soul is manufactured in Korea in a range of
11 exterior
colours
, including three
new
options
(Saddle Brown, Olive Green and Misty Green). However, individual markets
may offer a smaller selection of colours
to best

suit local consumer preferences.

Technical updates deliver customer benefits

A nu
mber of
significant
technical updates

for refreshed Soul

includ
e

the
introduction
of a
new 140 ps gasoline engine
and
new six
-
speed manual and automatic transmissions
.

The
all
-
aluminium
1.6
-
litre GDI Gamma
gasoline engine
replaces the previous
124

ps unit
. It
generates
13

per

cent more power (
140 ps at 6,300 rpm
)

and
delivers
166

Nm of torque at
4,850

rpm
. With this engine, Soul accelerates to 100 kph in
10.4

seconds and
can go on to
reach a top speed of 185 kph.

For the standard gasoline Soul, fuel eco
nomy on the
combined cycle is 6.4 l/100 km
,

with
a CO
2

figure of 149 g/km. When equipped with Kia’s
optional
EcoDynamics
pack
, which features ISG (start/stop) and AMS (alternator
management),

the
car’s economy is improved to 6.0 l/100 km and 139 g/km.

Fo
r buyers who prefer diesel power, the 128 ps U2 CRDi engine is carried over. It produces
260
Nm
of torque
at just
1,900
rpm
, while f
uel consumption is a modest 4.9 l/100 km and
tailpipe emissions are 129 g/km. On this model
,

the
EcoDynamics pack
improves

economy
to 4.7 l/100 km and cuts CO
2

to 125 g/km.

In most European markets, both engines will be offered with a choice of new six
-
speed
manual or automatic transmissions
,

bringing the latest Soul’s specification in line with the
rest of Kia’s modern prod
uct range.

These gearboxes now feature very high top (6
th
) gear
ratios

0.596:1 for the diesel and 0.727:1 for the gasoline car

for enhanced cruising
refinement and
improved
fuel economy.

A quieter cabin with a wider choice of options

Inside, the cab
in benefits from a revised centre console, circular
-
type LCD heater controls, a
wider choice of new interior fabrics (Soul fabric, Tartan Check, Houndstooth and Leather)
and the availability of a Supervision (high definition) instrument cluster as an optio
n. For
greater durability
,

key touch
-
points in the cabin are coated in a nano
-
layered, multi
-
metal
paint. To ensure a comfortable driving position for all owners, the steering wheel has both
tilt and telescopic adjustment.

Across Europe, Soul’s standard

specification may vary country
-
by
-
country. However, it is
anticipated that equipment fitted as standard will include: air
-
conditioning, ele
c
tric w
indows
front and rear, a radio and CD player with six

speakers, a
height
-
adjustable driver’s seat,
60/40 spl
it rear seat backrest, trip computer and remote fuel flap release.

All Soul models now have improved NVH performance thanks to a greater sound
-
proofing
under the bonnet and more streamlined door mirror housings. Quieter cruising is delivered
by the six
-
s
peed transmissions

higher top gear ratios.

Active and passive technologies ensure a safer drive

In
all
European markets,
Soul is
fitted as standard
with the latest active safety technologies
,
including
ESC (Electronic Stability Control), ABS (anti
-
lock

braking system), Brake Assist

System, Traction Control System

and
HAC (Hill Assist Control
,

to prevent roll
-
back when
starting on an incline)
.

New for refreshed Soul is
VSM (Vehicle Stability Management)
,
which counters the effects of
asymmetric grip on
slippery mixed road surfaces and helps the vehicle stay in a stable
position by reducing the amount of steering assistance (if the driver is applying too much
steering effort)
or
increasing the assistance (if the driver is applying too little effort).

In
terms of passive safety, every Soul is fitted with six airbags

front, side and curtain

and
front seat ‘active’ head restraints to minimize whiplash injuries, as standard.
