Department of Biotechnology


Profile of the Department
The Department of Biotechnology has successfully completed seven years existence. It
started with the establishment of two endowment chairs donated by Dr. Asish Kr.
Mondal, an NRI in memory of his parents, Sri Mrigendranath Mondal Chair for Professor
in Biotechnology and Sm. Saralabala Mondal Chair for senior research fellow in
Biotechnology.
The six batches of students passing M.Sc in Biotechnology from this Department have all
secured First class marks, a matter of pride for us. The alumni from our Department are
engaged in research leading to Ph.D degrees in major research establishments in India
(IICB, Bose Institute, NII, CDFD, ILS, IITs) and abroad. A few ex students have joined
Biotech industries in India (Chembiotech, Biocon, LabIndia). However, the rate of
growth of such industries has not kept up with the expectations form the promises of
Biotechnology.
DBT, Govt. of India has extended its support since it recognized our M.Sc
(Biotechnology) Course in 2006. 10 students are taken from the combined Entrance
Examination, conducted by JNU on all India basis, who enjoy studentship offered by
DBT and 15 students are selected from our own Entrance Examination held each year.
Two patents, a few publications and a DST project on Arctic Microorganisms are some
of the achievements of our Department. Besides teaching learning process for M.Sc
degree, research scholars working forwards their Ph.D degree are an essential part of our
Department.
Ranking of all the State funded Universities teaching post graduate courses in
Biotechnology in India by Biospectrum, a journal devoted to Biotechnology placed our
Department within the top twenty in the last two years.
Fulbright Exchange programme of USA selected our Department and Prof. Asis Das
spent one month Jan 16
th
to Feb 15
th
,2007 in our Department teaching the M.Sc students.
Prof.P.Roy was selected by National Centre for Antarctic & Oceanic Research, Goa to
participate in the expedition to Arctic region in August,2009.

Basic Research on Extreme and Mesophilic Proteins (Experimental Studies and database
Analysis)
Analyses of Atomic Structure and Sequences of proteins for Understanding Protein
Adaptation in Extreme Environments. Our preliminary studies on proteins show that
a. Fundamental Matrices of amino acids deviate from Universal behavior
b. Positional variation of amino acids play crucial role in structural
stabilization of extreme proteins w.r.t. its mesophlic counterparts
c. Prediction inaccuracy in secondary structure of proteins seems to be
an imposed law of natural evolution.
d. Chromophore forming loop of some proteins shows strict selectivity in
amino acids composition.
We are developing softwares using C-language, Unix (C- & B- Shell), and Gawk
for automated analysis of sequence and structure databases in these aspects.
