Learning strategies are
designed to be innovative,
flexible and are built upon
established practices within
the University. As such, there
are a variety of different
delivery modes that address
different learning styles, and
support and encourage active
student participation. The
format of these range from
e-learning to formal lectures
and includes industrial
visits, tutorials, workshops,
practical laboratory work
and independent research
projects. Assessment
throughout the programme
uses a diverse range of
methods that are appropriate
to the learning outcomes
of the modules, and aim
to motivate learners, for
example, written coursework,
projects, poster and

(Hons) Biotechnology (Top-
Up) programme will provide

Is this programme right for me?
If you are keen to develop your biotechnology interest then our BSc (Hons)
programme provides an excellent grounding in a wide range of biotechnology
subjects and will prepare you for an exciting career in the industry. Join our
programme at second level via our BSc (Hons) Biomedical Studies route
or directly at third level with our specialist module study. Options include
industrial biotechnology, environmental microbiology, medical microbiology
and drug development – topics taught with input from specialist tutors with
industrial experience.
The BSc (Hons) Biotechnology (Top-Up) programme includes three core
modules:
1. Advanced Molecular Biology
2. Immunology
3. Research project
Specialist study available in Industrial Biotechnology, Environmental
Biotechnology, Medical Microbiology and Drug Development.
Undertaking a project is an essential part of the programme and carries
a strong practical element. In the project you will gain high level skills in
specialist techniques and work with members of academic staff on a research
investigation. Examples of past projects include:
Developing specialist PCR tests to assess hygiene in the food
industry
This project has developed a specific test to identify the horA gene in food
spoilage lactic acid bacteria. Bacteria with this membrane transporter gene
can contaminate beverages because of the protection from the additional ion
pumping activity afforded by the gene. The gene is carried on a plasmid and
is a clear indicator of potential spoilage. The project has optimised a PCR
test using horA primers and screened a range of bacteria for specificity and to
provide validation for hygiene monitoring. The work was supported by local
biotechnology industries and involved collaboration with professional trade
bodies developing hygiene codes of practice.
Flow cytometry analysis of microorganisms in functional
foods
This project investigated methods to determine the viability of
Bifidobacter in probiotic foods and to assess their potential in
novel formulations. Survivability tests were conducted and the
effects of specific sugar substrates determined. The work is part
of a collaboration project with the University of Manchester and
involved joint activities with postgraduate students.
Our facilities and research support
Our facilities are modern with recently built laboratories containing
dedicated facilities for molecular biology, microbiology, cell
biology and physiology. Our programme integrates with pharmacy,
biomedical science and environmental teaching and benefits from
an up to date clinical viewpoint. In addition our teaching rooms are
purpose-built with full audio visual support.
Specialist equipment used for undergraduate biotechnology
teaching includes:
• Standard and Real Time PCR
• Flow Cytometry
• Pulse Field Chromatography
• Stir tank fermentation to pre industrial scale
• Gas and HPLC with mass spectroscopy
• Transmission and Electron microscopy
• Confocal microscopy.
Our staff are research active and engage in direct contacts
with industry to maintain their understanding of biotechnology
applications. Their research areas cover many biotechnology
applications including biomedical and clinical analysis, molecular
diagnostics, bioinformatics, bioremedioration, food and beverage
development and probiotics.
Our BSc (Hons) Biotechnology (Top-Up) programme at the University of
Sunderland is an ideal way to progress from diploma level study to a
full Honours degree in a highly technical subject. This will provide an
excellent qualification for employment in a dynamic industry.

I was fascinated by the BSc Biotechnology Top-Up programme as it offers
a broad study of a dynamic subject with great career opportunities. I am
particularly keen to work in the industrial sector and am looking forward
to using my skills in microbiology to gain this experience.
At the University of Sunderland I have taken Industrial Biotechnology and
Medical Microbiology options and conducted a project on microbiology
of probiotic foods. I also attended biotechnology research workshops on
specialist topics to extend my experience and hear the latest research in
forensic science.
