Cell phone
s

Background
& History

In the year 1843 an experiment, to gather information on whether
or not electricity could be conducted through space, conducted by a man
by the name of Michael Faraday became the foundation for cell phone
development.

The next major step in the h
istory of the cell phone was between
the years 1866 and 1873 where transmissions were powered using the
earth’s atmosphere as a conductor. This new method of sending
telegraphic messages was used by a man by the name of Mahlon Loomis,
who used this method
to send messages over an 18 mile gap between the
Cohocton and Beorse Deer mountains.

It wasn’t until a century later that the first prototype of a working
modern cell phone was made. Dr. Martin Cooper was the man behind
this and was the first person to mak
e a call on a portable cell phone.

Four years later 2000 citizens of Chicago

got their hands on a mobile
device and became part of the first ever public trials for the cell phone.

In the year 1988 “The Cellular Technology Industry Association”

was
created and their aim was the create the goals for cell phone providers
knowing that the future of the cell phone was looking bright and by the
year 2009 the cell phone industry was flurising having sold $65 million
worth of cell phone goods and with
the consumer market
buying more
and more the cell

phone market was looking to become a great success

How a cellular network
works

Mobile or cellular networks work by
converting voice, text and multi
-
media
messages or data calls into radio
frequencies. These calls are received and
tra
nsmitted by mobile phone base stations,
these base stations are what connect
the
calls between mobile phones, allowing people to communicate with each
other.

Current hardware

In this day in age mobile phones can be as
basic as a handheld communication device
or as high tech as a mini computer, almost
every phone will have a built in camera
and media player as
a minimum
requirement for the mobile phone market.
At the moment the current mobile phone
market is dominated by “Smartphones”
such as “Blackberry” “Iphone” and “Android” devices. “Smartphones”
can do a vast majority of things and are most popular for thei
r ability to
use apps, mobile phone applications.

Current software and apps

Applications for mobile phones come in a list
too long to note, there are a large number of
different apps all individually suited for their
target
audience. Depending on the handheld
apps can

be downloaded from either the
Network
provider (
such as games from o2’s
WAP store) or from the manufacturers own
market such as “Blackberry app world” or
“Itunes” a common
phrase

heard today is “there is an app for that”
basically stating that there is an app for almost anything, whether it be a
image editor, social networking app or even a trickster app to scare and
prank your friends.

Impact on society

In today’s society cell phones are a common appearance in the
hands of the public, there is not many places you can go where you
won’t

see someone talking or sending texts on a cell phone. People find
comfort knowing that if they have their cell phone the
y have instant
communication if in the need of help or just a simple chat. Some
however would say that mobile phones can become a distraction
whether if be a teenager or a child talking and texting with friends when
they are meant to be having family time
or doing their studies. Other
people find it very awkward if someone they are with take a phone call
in their presence, whether if they believe it to be rude hearing the phone
ring or they may feel obliged to leave them and let them take a private
call. I
n this day in age people can’t seem to take a casual walk down the
street without communicating on their phone, it seems that for most
mobile phone communication is a daily
routine

in their everyday lives.

Blog Research

History

The art of blogging first came about in the form of online diaries
shortly after the

itself was created. Online diaries first
came about in the year 1994 and t
he first
Blog

was created in January of
that year by a Student named Justin
Hall (
Links.net
.) By the year 1997 in
December,
Blogs

were given the name “Weblog” for “logging the Web”
by
online

diarist Jorn Barger an
d by April 1999 Weblog was shortened to
the now commonly known
phrase

“Blog” by a programmer named Peter
Merholz. Shortly after that websites allowing everyone on the web to
keep a
Blog

came about to become what it is today.

Popular platforms

Every blogger has their own
preferred website where they will
host their
Blogs
, maybe more than
one. There are a good few
different websites to choose from
such as
Wordpress which boasts a large personalisation interface, allowing
their users to manipulate their
Blogs

to suit their own personal taste or to
fit the theme of their
Blo
g
. Wordpress also allows for more than one
Blog

to be created by the same user on their profile so they can create
Blogs

for different things and they can gain followers. Twitter is similar to
Wordpress, but users do not have as much personalisation as tho
se users
of Wordpress and they are limited to how many words can be written in
each “Tweet.” Twitter is however popular for a lot of people, including
celebrities who often “Tweet” what they have been up to and allowing
their fans to follow them to keep up
dated, they also get verified so that
the fans know that the profile belongs to who they are following not just
someone imitating them, there are several other blogging sites such as
Blogger, Drupal and Joomla.

Personal use of websites

Code/scripting language

Blogs are created with a complex setup and structure, the end
results of the
Blog

becomes simple and user friendly for writing and
maintaining the
Blog

as everything is stored and displayed on an easy to
use interface. Blogs are cre
ated within 3 major elements, the Database,
the Scripting or Programming and the style and appearance information.

The database is where all the information about your
Blog

and
everything in your
Blog
. It stores everything, every post you write, all the
co
mments, all the categories, all the settings are all kept in the database.
Even the administration and authoring information is safely stored within
the database. By keeping all this information within the database
everything become very organized and by s
toring everything it allows for
things to be easily found and allows for certain information to be reused
over and over again, this becomes a very convenient time saver.

The scripting and programming component is what defines how the
web Blog page will app
ear to the viewer of the Blog. It does this by using
information that tells the site how to be displayed. It is the programming
component job to allow you to write a post and send it into the database
or add links to your blogroll. It controls all of the f
unctionality of your
Blogs. Your Blog is actually a software application that is running on a
web server. In the same way that Microsoft Word is software that runs
on your computer.
However instead of using the interface of the
software programme we use in
terface that is in an administration web
page.

The information entered into or pulled out of the database has to
be made into web pages which are sent to the browser, the scripting and
programming component cannot do this on its own and that is where the
f
inal component of the site comes in and this is called the Style sheet, this
is what holds all the rules and information controlling the layout and
appearance of the web
Blog

page, telling everything where it has to be
on the web page and how it has to loo
k on the page.

Plug

Plug
-
ins
/Extensions are pieces of software that are added into a
Blog

to
enhance the
user’s

experience of the site. By adding in these features the
user gains elements that only someone with experience in coding would
be able to achieve, such as a scrolling photo
gallery or a navigation menu
on their
Blog

page. There are tons of different add ins for
Blogs

such as
ones for navigation menus, picture galleries and slideshows, appearance
settings such as changing the colours of the page and the type interface
such as
font and font colour….there are also themes that are pre
-
set
interfaces for
Blogs

and all the user has to do is add in the content.
There
are a large number of more of different plug

Social impact

The social impact of Blogging has been a massive breakthrough for
people all over the world allowing them to share any type of
Blog
,
whether it is a celebrity sharing their latest piece of news, someone
sharing their

life adventures, sharing the latest news stories to the world,
to make an educational
Blog

for students to share you Photography
journey or your latest masterpiece. Almost anyone can make a
Blog

for
any kind of reason to share with other bloggers across t
he world,
everyone is blogging and the popularity for it is ever growing, I believe
blogging is not going anywhere soon.

Another good point to Blogs are
that they can be used by people to gain useful information on a product
they might be interested in buy
ing, before they go and invest in a product
they can read people’s Blogs on this product about other users views on
the product and discuss whether or not it is worth buying in the end
rather than just taking a chance on it when it may prove to be a waste
of
money.

Video Sharing Research

History

It was in the year 1997 that video sharing first came about, it was on the
site named

Share Your World
that first online video sharing came about,
at this time it was commonly known

as video hosting
.
This website gave
their users the chance to upload their video clips and share them with the
rest of the online world
.
It was in the year 2005 that the true face of
video hosting became known, the year that Youtube was created by
three f
ormer employees of Paypal,
Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed
Karim.

Uses

The main use of video hosting is to
connect with others over the web.
Whether it is for advertising the latest brands and products or

of course
advertising a new movie or hosting the latest music videos, it can be used

for sharing a funny video or simply to state your thoughts on something
t
hat is happening the world video hosting can be used for a number of
different reasons

and each video is out there to gather an audience
.

Copyright issues

For the users of web hosting sites such as Youtube

the biggest issue for
web video hosting is copyright, if you want your favourite song to go
with your new video you simply can’t just add it and upload it doing so
you are likely to either have the soundtrack removed from your video or
the video deleted a
ll together. Same goes for those uploading movies or
TV shows for other fans to watch. This is also a problem for the owners
of the content being used in the videos someone might upload something
that isn’t their making the real owner loose out on the publ
icity or indeed
the pay if the video is taken by another user without obtaining it legally.

Technology

As far as technology goes video sharing has become
easier than ever a large majority of the world has access
to a personal
computer and the internet giving most
people the chance to take part in sharing or watching
videos online. With wireless internet watching videos
on the move has become an easy privilege, someone
can be travelling with their laptop and with a
wireless conn
ection can easily create and watch web
hosted videos. Mobile devices have also recently
became a new source of watching videos on the go
and with users being able to record a video on a
mobile device and uploading straight to video sharing website such as
Youtube, video sharing has been taken to the next level.

Sites

There are a few known video sharing websites the most
popular being of course Youtube. Sites like these allow
anyone to upload and share their videos.
Advertisments of
new movies can be shown, musicians can upload their
latests music and music videos

Impact

The impact of Video sharing has been emence, Video sharing has enabled
a

lot of people new ways of getting their views and thoughts across to
the people, it has changed the way of journalism allowing journalists to
gain a story from something they have seen online. People can share
almost anything through video, gaming walkthr
oughs, music videos,
views and opinions on the world, TV and Movies are now streamed on
Youtube. So many things are becoming known on video hosting websites
and this isn’t going to change as the goal to become an internet star
online continues, some people

become famous online because of the
millons of Video hits they get on th
eir video, TV shows such as Rude
Tube broadcast the best of the best of internet movies, it doesn’t seem
like the hype for video sharing will ever die.

Social Media

History

Usenet systems were

the

first

form of social media, they first appeared in
1979
and were created
by Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis. Usenets let users
post articles or posts (referred to as “news”) to newsgroups.

It was

where people could sign up and communicate each other, these sites
normally also let people upload a photo of themselves

Uses

Social networking sites are mainly used to let people
from all over the world connect and communicate.
They are also used for advertising purposes, such as a
product brand page online from which people can join
to show their support and attract new potenti
al
buyers. Media artists such as musicians and actors can
have an account from which their fans can view to gain
more knowledge of their life and career, or of course for
people to make fan based pages for these people. Social
networking sites are now even

used for educational
purposes, with Facebook’s “groups” section students
studding at schools, collages and universities have the
chance to be added into a group for their classes and
courses and keep in contact with teachers/lecturers about coursework and

for feedback from teachers/lecturers and of course other students.

Technology

Social media is available to a wider
spread of people these days thanks
to apps being used on mobile
devices, so today peop

need to own a home computer to
gain access to
their favourite social
networking sites such as Facebook

Impact

The impact of social media has been huge, with the technology we have
to day it is nearly impossible for people to stay out of the social loop.
Anyone

over the world with internet access can create a social
networking account and connect with anyone around the world making
new friends in all kinds of different places. Mobile technologies mean that
anyone can access their accounts whenever they please if

they have the
app on their phone to do so, so keeping in touch with friends an family
